Silent non-gaming system?

Regarding the heatsink, although it may be heavy, as long as it has been attached properly to the motherboard (I believe the Ninja uses a backplate and then you screw the heatsink to that, making a heatink-motherboard-backplate sandwich) you shouldn't worry.

The Scythe Ninja doesn't use a backplate anymore, it uses the same connectors as the original socket 775 heatsink (unless you're using AMD, I'm not sure how it connects then).

But, as the OP is using a socket 775 intel it'll connect exactly the same way the stock heatsink connects

The cpu and ninja combination should not need the fan, I hope, with it not being under load. But a big chunk of copper attached to the cpu sticking out sideways? Doesn't sound so safe to me. However, a desktop case might not have enough space?

Any good ideas on the right cpu/cooler/mobo/case combination?

I have the Lian-li PC-7, Gigabyte P35-DS4 and the Scythe Ninja Rev. B along with the E6600 - all fits perfectly and works perfectly.

At 100% CPU for ~2 hours the CPU gets to around 43oC - this is with the very quiet fan that comes with the Ninja. I could run my PC silent if I didn't have the 8800GTX - that thing produces a lot of heat.

The Ninja should handle the E8400 perfectly without a fan.

Spec if for a AMD guys

As for ram - the CPU runs at 200x12.5 so use PC6400(800) with a x2 ratio

200x12.5=2.5Ghz
200x2=400 (DDR2)
x2 ratio - called DDR800 on this board if page 50 of the manual is correct ;)

2x 1gb of Giel value will suit a unbuntu install fine

Thanks for all your help folks, I finally bought this system:
Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H mobo
AMD 4850e cpu
Corsair 2gb ddr2 800 6400 RAM
Scythe Ninja full copper cooler
Enermax Modu 82+ 425W PSU
Arctic silver
Samsung Spinpoint S 160gb SATA-II HD
Samsung SH-S203 Rewriter
Antec Solo case

It is running totally silent at the moment:-) It is under my desk. If I put my head under I can just hear it. But it is only using the PSU fan. System temp is a steady 42C. CPU temp is a steady 45C.

With case fan and scythe fan turned on sys temp is 29C and CPU temp is 26C. The case fan is the noisiest, with scythe fan almost the same. Both are quiet compared with what I've been used to and I was happy with it like that until I tried it without those. The silence is wonderful! I don't use it for gaming so there won't be much stress on it but I'm hoping there might be a way to connect the scythe fan and get it to switch on at CPU temp of 50C, just so I can feel really safe.

I had no problem installing it with Ubuntu, by the way. Most things are recognized and I could connect to the internet straight away. There's some drivers for audio and video I need to figure out but what I see and hear now is OK. So I am a happy bunny! Thanks again for all the help!

Some motherboards have fan control that you can set by giving it a target temperature.

So, for example, if the target temperature is 50 the fan should spin at minimum/not at all if the temperature is below that.

CPUs are fine even up until 65oC - I think the max recommended by Intel is 67oC so I don't think those numbers would be that much different for AMD
