I think it's about time for a new system. My current P4 2.5GHz, 1GB RAM, GeFource4 4200 128Mb, 60&160Gb HD was horrible the last video I tried to edit, although a bigger hard disk would have helped.

I mostly do Photoshop & Video editing, although I would like to play with a decent driving sim if I could find one. And I'd like to be Vista ready - infact by the time Christmas is paid for, Vista probably will be ready - don't mind waiting a month or 2 for the finances to level out...

And I'd like it to be silent - or at least quiet. The PSU in my current machine sounds like an air conditioning unit, and the hard disks clatter like made. No need for a new monitor and DVD drives are OK.

Less than £600 would be nice, what do you think?

Hmmm... A bit of a ard one this. I dont really know much about "silent" PC's, bt would probablly say something like a:

Intel E6300, 2GB of ram DDR2 ram, a DS3 motherboard and an X1950 Pro and a Corsair 520W PSU would be a good base.

Should leave you some money over to get some nice Hard Drives to!

*EDIT* as a thought, the X1950 Pro might be a bit overkill if you dont game much, so in which case something like an 7600gs might be better.

Google for silent pc and you'll find several sites and forums dedicated to the subject. You'll get some useful info in this forum, but it's not a dedicated silence forum as some others are. Spec above is a good start though. Depends how 'silent' you want it. Not really difficult to get a PC semi-silent though, as long as you do more than 5 minutes research on the subject.
