OK this may seem a silly question, but I thought Id ask anyway :p

What HDs would you guys recommend for Linux - I know its shouldnt really matter, but Im wondering if there are any issues with regards to IDE/SATA/SATA2 interfaces and Linux drivers for these. I presume drivers are quite mature and are inbuilt like Windows...

I just want a cheap HD to muck around with Linux again in light of the fact Im going to be doing my Linux+ soon. So I really need to look at a few distros so thought its best to get a seperate HD to do this on...

I guess I only need around 160/250GB (best £ per GB) to run say 3 distros easily with storage for whatever I dl for them and cd/dvd images. Any recommendations?

TIA

Its not really to do with the hard drive that you buy. I've certainly not had any problems running my SATA1 hard drives on linux. The drivers are actually down to your controller, so if you controller has linux drivers then you are pretty much set to go. SATA1 support is quite good now I do believe, as for sata2 I cant make an informed comment but I'd highly imagine that sata2 drives should work fine.

If you know what board and sata controller you have, then look around to see if there are any drivers for that controller on your distro for sata2.

Edit:

And yes, any time that I've had to install onto my sata drives recently the drivers have been inbuilt (which is more than I can say for windows which I had to slipstream them myself even with SP2 on the disc, but I guess linux distros update their ISOs more often :P).

Cheers for the trouble - Ive got a DFI NF4 SLI-DR which uses either the nVidia SATA2 controller or the Silicion Image Sil 3114 SATA controller. Probably use the nVidia controller to make things easier and more compatible. Id be surprised if there wasnt SATA2 drivers for that controller..
