Silly Question - 16:10 or 16:9 for gaming?

Ive got a 16:9 and watching films and tv (through tv card and bbc iplayer) looks sexy.

But sometimes its proberbly better to have a little more height. Its a personal prefrence, games look good, and I love my tv and films.

But if your doing a lot of typing and web surfing I would go for 16:10

16:10 imho, at least a 16:10 monitor can display the same as a 16:9, albeit with black bars, if you buy 16:9 you can never reclaim that extra height your missing should you want to.

I would also say 16:10 - but it does depend on your usage. If you mainly use your monitor for DVD's etc then 16:9 is prob fine for you, but if you do more with PC Apps etc then the extra height of the 16:10 can be invaluable.

Well, depends on resolution. I have a 16:9 1920x1080, I have more height and width than a 16:10 1680x1050 ;)

i borrowed my mates 24" DGM (16:10) for 3 weeks before getting my Dell S2409W (16:9)

can honestly say I didn't notice the difference after swapping them

If you ever intend to plug a console into the monitor go with 16:9. This is because unless you spend quite a lot and get a 16:10 monitor specifically with 1:1 pixel mapping, the image will be stretched ever so slightly horizontally.

For PC use however, any modern graphics card will do this pixel mapping for you when it comes to displaying films and television.

I have both formats each on 24" screens, and to be honest I actually prefer the 16:9 aspect ratio.

Check out the Dell S2409 as mentioned above. It is an awesome monitor for the price :D

Well I have both the 2407WFP and the S2409. The 2407WFP has sharper colours, and the viewing angle is slightly better, but at double the cost I don't really think it is worth it.

When it comes to viewing video, I actually prefer watching it on the S2409, however I prefer gaming on the 2407WFP, possibly due to the extra height. Although in reality the extra height does not make that much difference, even when working with documents.

For a general purpose monitor go with the S2409, at £200 it's an absolute bargain. Also the aesthetics of the monitor are superior to the 2407WFP, with curved edges and discrete buttons.

Well I have taken the plunge and have ordered a Dell S2409 for less than £170 inc delivery. I wasn't sure about which of the two aspect ratios to go for when buying a new screen but the price of the Dell helped to focus my mind :)

Quick rule of thumb: Using computer primarily for gaming, digital media: get either the 16:10 or 16:9, doesn't really matter. Using computer primarily for productivity work (word processing, programming etc.) get 16:10 - the extra vertical resolution is much more important there.

That is what I have read many times :)
Whilst I can appreciate the extra height with the 16:10 monitors I would have thought that the 16:9, offering a wider aspect, would also have some value enabling two different applications to be opened side by side..?

Still there might be no right or wrong as long as the purchaser is aware of the difference and purchases accordingly.

Well, a 24" 16:10 monitor is 1920x1200, a 16:9 24" monitor is 1920x1080, so the same horizontal pixel count.

The real benefit of a 24" 16:10 monitor is that you can fit 2 sides of A4 paper next to each other in word/DTP packages (and that 16:10 is very, very close to the golden ratio which we humans tend to find aesthetically pleasing :D)

as above, can't fault my S2409W, I mainly use mine for FPS gaming.

the next screen I'll get will be a 24" 120hz screen, but will keep this dell for the next 3 or 4 years

Just taken delivery of my S2409W and I'm very impressed with both the picture quality and performance.
The price was just the icing on the cake :)
