Silly question - do you need a passport to enter scotland from England (flying)

I did a bit of research (read googling) and found out that you need either a Passport, or a driving license.

A few people have told me this isn't the case though, one woman told me her friend (whom she was apparently with at the time) entered using her medical card and bank card ? That sounds a bit weird to me...

Really odd question, likely a silly one - but trying to find out one way or another. :p

*edit* changed the thread title - so travel from England (say a london airport) to Edinborough.

I think that most airports would want your passport as proof of identification before you check in/board the plane. Ringing the airline would be the best way to find out.

Depends on the airline. You don't actually need anything to cross the border, but you will need some form of Photo ID to board the plane.

Yeah - I figured some sort of Photo ID was required.

The cost of trains vs plane... it's actually cheaper to buy the passport and a plane ticket than to buy a train ticket!

Tried doing this just now with BA.

Was on the phone 1 and a half minutes (on an 0844 number) and then was cut off (as in it went dead) because they said they were dealing with a lot of calls! :p:(

No you dont require a passport. But you do require ID. I think with a photo. Driving License would be a good bet...

But if you have a passport, just use it :)

As others have said you should only need a piece of photo ID but a lot of airlines will only take passports and to be honest it saves a lot of possible hassle using your passport in any case and personally I wouldn't want to risk flying in the UK without one.

I remember one airline a few years back (just after one of hikes up in air security) said you only needed a valid form of photo ID but then when reading the small print the only form of ID they now accepted was a passport.

Also about the plane/train cost, if you pre book early, train is much cheaper. Its even better when you consider (for instance) Edinburgh Waverly to Kingcross is city centre to city centre with no need to faff around with taxis/buses or whatever to airports that are a good 30-60mins out of town (at least with the cheap flights).

My mum has flown from England to Scotland a few times and she owns neither a passport or a drivers license. Thinking about it, not sure what she uses.

/waits for jokes about my mum :)

hahahaha.......you're mum has limited travel options (there you go :))

My cousin was told by the airline he could use any photo ID via a phone call to them. When he checked in they told him everyone needed a passport...

From the BA website:

Q What forms of ID do I need to check in at a conventional desk?
A Suitable forms of ID include:

Domestic travel
Credit card, Executive Club card, driving licence, company works card / ID.
