Hi, I am attempting to set up my wireless networkwith Ubuntu and Mint (turns out they are pretty similar) on the live CDs-I dont want to install either unless I can get the network working.

On both distros, my wireless card is recognized and my network is seen. However, it simply tries to connect continuously. It never fails, and it never succeeds. I have typed in the right security code.

The same thing happens on Windows. However, in that I double click on the icon in the taskbar, and manually input my IP address and gateway and it works fine. I cannot find the way to do this in Linux. Either I must set up the network entirely manually, which I cant get working, or I cannot edit any of the settings on the automatic one. Any ideas?

LiveCDs can be a bit funny with wireless drivers, there are a couple of things I had to do with my Dad's Dell laptop and Fedora 8 to get it working, was having the same problem. You'll probably be best having a look on the Ubuntu forums for your specific laptop/wireless chipset.

For my dad's laptop I had to copy some firmware files (extracted from a Windows driver) into the right place, blacklist and remove some modules and finally load the right one - it's a Broadcom 43xx wireless chipset.

Hmm, may just take the plunge and install it. At least it recognizes the card, and Mint has Ndiswrapper installed so I can just do it through that if I have to.
