hey guys,

My first post here as im hopeing you guys can help out a Tech noobie.....

TlDr at bottom.

Couple of days back a friend of mine started talking about cpu temps ect ect and saying that his was mid thirties, out of intrest i wanted to check mine out. downloaded speed fan and it shows that my Cpu + GPU hit almost 100c when im playing APB/Cod4... crazy hot in comparison to his 50-60 when he is playing. so i talked to him about the cooling in my case and we came to the conclusion it has none of any decent value.

the case is a Jeantech Aqua and it comes with its stock 120mm fan at the front. and other than that the only air coming in is through the empty 80mm fan holes and the PSU. after a few hours of running temps are pretty darn high!
first thing i did is opened it up and cable tied some of the spare power leads from the psu out the way, and then jumped on the net and orderd 4 80mm fans, (there is 4 slots so i just maxed it out) and a fan controller. still waiting on those to come, should be tomorrow i think. but i also wanted to change the CPU heatsink to the "Thermalright Silver Arrow CPU Cooler" but have read that its massive, but couldnt work out if it would fit or not, so i thought i would ask you guys on here for a hand as some of you seem to know your stuff!

TlDr:

can i fit Thermalright Silver Arrow CPU Cooler in my Aqua case made by Jeantech with a Asus p5n-D mobo?

Sorry for the Poor grammar/spelling. not a strong point!

Thanks in advance,

i would love to tell you, but there is nothing on the internet that says what the maximum supported cooler height is for the case.

for the silver arrow to fit you will need ~168mm of clearance between the motherboard PCB and the side of the case. you will also need to have low profile RAM, such as Corsair XMS3. it will not fit under corsair vengance ram, and doesnt quite fit over Gskill Ripjaw RAM

is that measured from the chip itself? or....

my 168mm measurement was from the motherboard PCB, jack's measurement was from the chip

if the cooler doesnt fit then you can return it within seven days under the distance selling regulations. you will have to pay the postage, but you will get a refund on the cooler

dont worry about it touching the side, my cooler bends the side of my case a touch, but it hasnt caused me any problems

I've just measured my 2nd silver arrow and it's easily over 166mm - so the height may not be an exact science more of a guide.

I'm now having to make careful measurements to see if it will actually fit in my case as a result - because at 162.7mm it was just doable[sic]...

166mm. Really?
In that case I'd best check mine before I try installing it in my HAF932. It wont touch the side, but it may touch the side panel fan if it's much more than 163mm.

Make that 168mm - have just done a more accurate measurement.

mine is 168mm from the very tip of the heatpipe to the base of the HS - i may have to return mine if doesn't fit as i only allowed for a 3mm discrepency.

cheers for the info guys. yea not so sure if its going to fit if its that big. may have to take off that side fan.

if i then mounted the fan on the outside of the case do you think that would work? or is that going to just be a dust magnet?

cheers,

Well, it fits and i don't think it's touching the side of the case - still testing...

Temps are superb (and as expected) idles at:

N.B. these results are with the fans only running at 50% speed - even under load

  • Core 0 @ 23
  • Core 1 @ 26
  • Core 2 @ 35
  • Core 3 @ 29

Core 3 has always been an anomoly so i'm ignoring that.

Under load after a quick prime 95 test:

  • Core 0 @ 45
  • Core 1 @ 52
  • Core 2 @ 55
  • Core 3 @ 52

I was using a Freedom Tower before and the idle loads on the silver arrow average about 15 degrees lower and at load 20 degrees lower - with the clock in my sig.

I will add that it was an absolute bitch to fit in a smaller case (lian li Pc-7)...

Will upload pics and further thoughts later...

EDIT: I'll adding further info/updates in this thread.

Thanks for the heads up in the other thread Plec. From looking at the dimensions of the silver arrow, even with the fan mounted on the other side id be unable to fit it with my current ocz reaper ram.

Prolimatech super mega dimensions.

Super mega in situ with a 25mm depth fan.

No worries.

Ah, shame, as i get the feeling you would have found the SA an interesting component to play with (although your temp differences wouldn't be as drastic as mine as you have a mighty cooler already.).

Here's another image that may be of help it came from this thread which also has a couple of other images/setups (but as you've rightly noted the dimensions are what you should be governed by).

If it did prove possibe for your setup i would fix the case fan on the outside of the case.

Id have to change ram modules to something with no heatsinks, and as the reapers im running are a 7-7-7-24 kit, it would be hard to find something comparable. Rear case fan wouldnt be a problem, i could remove the one in the pic above, this cse has another 120mm fan above it, (in psu bay, as the psu can be top or bottom mounted).
