Anyone done this? Toying with the idea of going down on the Saturday for qualifying then camping followed by race, but worrying that the camp site will be chocka. Alternatively could go down on the Sunday just for the race, but would be nice to make a weekend of it.

So er yeah, anyone done this?

Not wanting to put you off, and I am sure their are plenty of others that will disagree with this and say they had fantastic times, but;

2012 myself my wife, my best friend and his fiance went to Silverstone F1 camping at the woodlands campsite.

we got their a bit later than planned, arriving at about 4pm on the Thursday to be told we had to park in a field, and then walk approx 3/4s of a mile to where we were allowed to pitch our tents.

Luckily I suspected this would happen so brought a trolley jack, but owning a large heavy tent that comes in 3 bags, plus all our other equipment it took several hours of trudging back and forth through the worsening mud from the car to the campsite and back carrying all our gear.

we found a spot on a hill to get pitched, it was quite cramped compared to regular camp sites, and the services were quite a walk away for toilet/shower/water etc.

We finally got camp built and cooked tea had few drinks and went to bed.

Friday was wet, we queued for a long time to get into the showers etc and finally made our way into the circuit.

Practice sessions were quiet due to the rain but it was fantastic to finally see a modern F1 car in the flesh, the sound was like nothing else I have experienced in years of attending motor racing events (mainly BTCC, gold cups etc)

That night their was a party atmosphere in the campsite it was quite noisy and lively, which was to be expected and we had a good night, went to the big tents to watch some bands etc and had a good time.

However, at 3am, we awoke to hear my friends fiance screaming, a group of men had crept into their tent and she had awoke and found them going through their bags.

They ran off and we did not catch them but my friend was obviously very upset. This was her first camping trip ever, in terrible conditions and she had been making the most of it so far, but this was the final straw.

we went to report this to security and their were several people already their saying they had been broken into etc. The security was typical G4S so utterly useless, and they basically did not care. We complained and complained until they got someone more senior down who took our names numbers and advised to come see the proper manager in the morning (she was the night time duty replacment etc).

We went back to the tents and tried to get some sleep.

Next morning my friends decided they did not want to stay any longer as they were worried/scared for their possessions etc.

Myself and my wife are seasoned campers so the conditions were bad but not phasing us really, but we did not really want to stay if our friends were going to leave, so we decided that we would leave as well.

My friend wanted to complain about the poor security and facilities etc etc so started we all went to see the day manager from the security, who ended up after talking to several different people to meet the man that actually owns the farmland that the campsite was located on. He was incredibly apologetic, took us into the track to meet the head of public relations from Silverstone who agreed to full refunds and tickets to the 2012 BTCC event for all of us.

He then took us backto our campsite in his discovery, we took down our campsite and loaded it into his disco, and he took us back to the cars. He had already arranged for a tractor which pulled us out of the campsite and onto the road and we left.

We ended up only seeing the Friday practice which was a shame, but it was in the end for free and we got to goto the BTCC that year as well.

Not wanting to put you off, I have heard they have made several improvements to the camping for 2013 and more are planned for 2014, but I have instead made plans to goto Barcelona this year for the F1, least I won't get drowned their :)

2012 was a bit nuts camping wise... The field carparks for the woodlands campsite were horrific due to a lot of rain. We were really lucky with this and were able to move our car to a proper carpark but even so, all we could hear the morning of the race and after the race were cars getting stuck and wheels spinning.... It was still a brilliant experience for my first race weekend though despite being hideously unprepared and the weather being awful.

2013 was far far better. We were able to park next to our tent. (No lugging stuff about.) The weather was better although still a bit wet at times. (Not much you can do about that. :) ) They had also made more improvements with regards to the camping and leaving the site after race day.

If you want to/can, i'd advise getting down there on the Thursday and leaving late Saturday/Early Sunday as its a lot easier to get in and get a decent spot and then a lot less frantic trying to leave. 1000's of cars trying to leave a site via 3 exits is always going to bring logistical complications. They have said that this will be further improved though and me and my mates will be back this year. :)

We did Whittlebury Park camping a couple of years ago and it was okay. You get a set space and the facilities were okish.. could be a bit better. Some of the drivers stay at the hotel there, so you can see them coming back at the end of each evening and get stuff signed :)

I was at 2012 and it was nuts. You have to remember it was very wet. Luckily we had electrical hook up which meant we were up by the entrance with our cars.

I shall be there this year and can't wait.

We did 2010 camping (for our honeymoon!!) and I was glad we got there on the Thursday pm as it was already chocka. We got quite a decent end spot, but someone ended up camping in front of us. There was a good atmosphere on the evenings with a band etc, and not a bad walk to the circuit. 2010 was red hot though so we had no issues with parking or mud in general.

What I would say is, on the Sunday morning, pack up and drive your car to the side of one of the exit roads. Less to walk at the end of the day and also avoids much of the traffic in the campsites.

Whilst I've never stayed at Whittlebury for the F1, I have for some other events and it's also a decent place. Plus you have the added bonus of seeing drivers arrive at the hotel.

Sounds terrifying about the people going through your stuff though. Once at JAE at Peterborough show ground I was having an afternoon snooze when I heard the tent zip open. I was right at the front of the tent and thought it was my hubby, so half asleep I grabbed his arm. He drew it away and zipped the tent back up. I fell back to sleep. Later when I asked him about it he said he hadn't been to the tent :/

Woodlands in 2012 was really quite bad due to the weather. Our mob got there nice and early for the electric hookup and could park by the tents. But my car needed pushing out on the Monday. I think you'll definitely struggle to get a good spot only turning up on the Saturday.

Despite all the bad weather I had a great time camping. The track action (or lack of) was disappointing though. Fingers crossed for less wet weather this year!
