This is a very slow project and I need reassurance I have got this all right.
What started out as re-housing an ancient p5B-VM with Core Duo E6600 from an SG01 to SG03 became a full rebuild when (I think) the cpu died.
My new spec now comprises:
Silverstone SG03 case
Asus Maximus VII Gene uATX
Intel 4690k i5
EVGA Gefore GTX960
Corsair Vengence Pro Series DDR3 2x 2x8GB 2133mhz 11-11-11-27
3 x Iiyama 27" Prolite X2783HSU
The B I G problem I have been having is the CPU cooler.
I thought my old scythe low pro job would do the job but it a) fouls one of the RAM slots and b) I cant get one of the pushpins down.
So, I got sidetracked and became aware of the all in one water cooling units and bought a Silverstone Tundra TD03-E.
It so nearly fits buyt doesnt - despite the case having two 120mm fans in the front the fact that the ends of the rad make the unit longer than 120mm mean that it would only have been possible to fit a single 120mm fan AND there is not the depth to do the double fan stack one either side of the rad because it would foul on the main power block on to the mobo. Additionally, I was very concerned that with the pipes mounting on the side of the block that the block unit would not quite mount correctly on to the cpu as there are some big chunky metal things (heatsinks?) very close to the cpu on this mobo.
So, the best that I can see that WILL almost certainly fit is a low profile Noctua NH-9i which seems to get very good reviews. It is all nicely contained within the 'keep-clear' zone but I could fit something taller in. Silverstone's website states that max cpu cooler height can be 82mm. Obviously with the fan on top facing (away from) the PSU then some gap is desirable. (nb the psu is exhausting out of the case)
Have I missed any other options, would changing the fan to a better / thicker one make any improvement?
Its not going to get a hard time, the only gaming that will take place (eventually) will be some FlightX. Am i being too cautious, is there any need to be worried that the CPU is say 60 degrees rather than 40?
Also, is there anything I can improve on for the case fan to be both push more air and to run quieter / slower? I do have an areocool touch screen panel which will probably find its way on to the rig at some point.
Sorry for all the questions and probably choosing the wrong sub-forum to post this on.
