Hi there,

I'm looking for advice on a rig I intend to build for a buddy.

I'm looking at using the Silverstone TJ08 case (microATX form factor which is what he wants) and this case looks pretty promising.

Having owned a shuttle many moons ago, I know SFF (at least) is a pitb to work with and can run very hot, but this case looks a bit bigger with much better cooling, so presumably that should not be as much of a problem.

I am guessing (looking at the pics on SS's site) that the case would fit in an 8800GTX and would probably put a 2180 in there (OC'd to about 3ghz).

So I guess I have a few questions for any that are able to offer their thoughts/views/experience on this:

1 - Has anyone owned one of these cases, if so what where your impressions?

2 - Space - Do you think I can squeeze an 8800GTX in there, space wise?

3 - Cooling/thermals - For this build it is antipated that it would include a 2180 CPU OC'd to 3ghz, would the thermals (assuming a half decent cooler) of this case, accomodate a 8800GTX and a 3ghz CPU?? If so might a G0 quad @ 3ghz be too much?

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this before I finalise the spec with him.

Cheers!

I would definately not look at fitting a 8800 in the case myself.

It should fit in but you will be using up most of the cases space killing the airflow and most mATX boards are designed for media cards which are shorter so you run the risk of the 8800 covering most of the ports on the motherboard up.

Certainly is possible although it may be a lot of hassle to do, may be worth holding out for one of the new single slot 8800 cards that should arrive in the future, would be much better suited to SFF.

Ahh good point Yewen thanks, I had not thought of that point on airflow (never having owned an 8800 perhaps I am under estimating the size of these monsters!).

oooooohhhhh, I didn't even know nVidia where planning a smaller version of the 8800. That will be great (pity he needs the rig now though).

Thanks for the advice buddy:), I think your points have persuaded me not to go down this route. I'll investigate some smaller midi-size cases for my friends build, and see if that works (given he definately wants the 8800).

The 8800 cards are pretty large, think a really fat 7800 thats a good couple cm longer and then some.

Whats your budget for the case?

It is possible to fluke it in with some other mATX cases but then you sacrifice the CPU cooling as you have to take a low height solution.

Your probably best going for something of the PC7 height range or modding a mATX case heavily.

The v600 is a potential option but may need a lot of thought.

I have a TJ-08 (now spare) How long is the 8800GTX?
PCI blanking plate to front case fan is exactly 12", but give room for PCI-E lead, so 10.5"

It's a good case, I have no problems with it- IF you're not a "tweaker" ie you put it together and not change bits around. Using stock/small HSF is fine, but lack of HD spacing is a minus point, as is space around PSU cabling, and spare cable tidy-up. If you just build it up and leave it alone then it's great.

A Scythe Ninja fits, however that'll block the all the HD cages. The HD bay could do with silicon mounts (as it is metal to metal contact) so the the most silent. The side vent needs a air filter, I've used stockings and stretch a square patch over it.

The case fans at stock are a bit loud (for a HTPC) at 7v pratically silent however hardly any airflow- fine for a HTPC but not a gaming rig. tbh if you're building a gaming PC I'd get at least a maxi tower.

Overall 8/10 for a SFF, but 3/10 for gaming/tweakers. It's better case than Q-Pack cube, and cools better than Sugo with more space.

Thanks badbob, that's really helpful, kinda confirms what Yewen was saying too.

Cheers for the info. This rig would be a gaming rig, so best keep looking I think.
