I loved simcity 3000 back in the day, may even have my CD kicking about somewhere. Simcity 4 is only a couple of quid in steam, but I've heard it's not great, but also that there is a good mod scene.

Worth a go?

so many hours ive spent on that.

Get the realistic traffic mod for it, think it was called NAM or something.

Havent got too high hopes for the new version coming but the 4th with the rush hour addon is still one of my favourite time sinks in gaming :)

Good to hear, watching a youtube video on it now, looks a like a steep learning curve!

Any vital tips you can give me? Such as ideal zone sizes etc, where to build industry etc? 4 looks very different to 3000 and I was really only a novice at that!

Yes. It is.
SimCity 4 is way better than SimCity 3000 IMO.
Not as good as SimCity 2000 though, that's a classic.

Only reason not to buy it is if you value your free time.

Thanks mate.

Just installed NAM :) Any good mods for graphics and widescreen fixes etc? Can't select higher than 1600x1200 currently.

have a read up on region play, in order to get your city into some epic proportions that's a really fun way to play.

So the basic premise is start a city close to a corner of a map, start zoning for light residential and industrial, then add a road link to a neighbour region.

Exit the map and start in that new region zoning for heavy/medium industrial. You can stick your coal power plants etc in this new zone which will basically be a dirty industry/pollution zone.

Because there will be high demand for jobs here people will leave your city in the starting region to travel here to work.

You get the benefits of the jobs but none of the downside of the pollution.

As you started your main town in the corner you can now do a similar thing with commercial zoning. Get a bit of demand in your initial city then make a link to a bordering region and make it your commercial region.

Just google some region play tips and you will see lots of advice.

You end up with different regions catering for different needs of your sims.

Need a money trainer :( I always struggle with cash in these games like most folks. Loved Sim3k.

NAM is a must for this - the game used to struggle with this mod, but PCs now are more than capable of running massive cities. Very jealous of people playing this for the first time.

Makes sense, the videos I was watching shows this but doesn't state it as a strategy per sé, it's just obviously what he's doing.

Can't wait to try it. Not had a chance yet - I've just had to redo all my home network security, as my router decided to clear the MAC filter list kicking everything off the network. Stupid thing.

I like the fact that they've taken away the infrastructure building, pipework mainly. Although I hope it isn't too simplistic at the same time if I can say that. Does look interesting though seeing the people going about.

Yeah most of the simcity series was good.

My thoughts exactly, to be honest I felt the pipework laying was a boring aspect to the game, so Im glad that they combined that along with power into the the roads.

I prefer cities XL series
Edit: the 2011 version is on sale, its worth looking at if your into city builders
