I love these remarks from iphone users "just works"

Do the GS 2, HTC one S/X, Galaxy nexus/nexus etc. etc. not "just work" out of the box as well especially sense powered handsets?

Just because you get an android handset does not mean that you have to faff about with replacing every app etc. and changing every setting.

Both are exactly the same essentially, except on IOS you are restricted a lot and don't have any where as much choice even if JB when compared to android.

As for hardware/software faults, both are just as bad as each other really, see plenty of people complaining about battery drain etc. in the 4s thread and screen issues with yellow tinting etc.

EDIT:

Whilst android market might not be as good as apples market (yet) it has a lot of good apps that are feature full and work great and in some cases far better than IOS equivalents. Again the apps are just there for choice, some people are happy with the stock experience of sense, stock ICS etc. however, plenty of people want to be able to customize things to their liking and have certain features and at least if you wish to do this stuff on android, you can do it very easily without having to root and flash a custom ROM etc., where as with the iphone, you can't, you have to JB it first.........

Also you must have installed dodgy apps or messed a setting up on your android phone if you kept getting those messages.

EDIT 2:

And as a HTC one S user (I have also replaced a lot of stock apps with 3rd party ones, have over 65 apps installed), I have had no problems except 2 crashes, which may have been related to a beta app. And my bro has had no problems with his stock 2.2 HTC desire either in the last 2 years, I don't think he has even had a crash.......

told you someone would take offence :)

I'm just giving my opinions. I'm in the industry and I've had a lot of exposure to phones and I know plenty of people who are very very happy with Android, I'm not one of them. I'm just suggesting the OP might... just might have the same experience as me.

I had an iPhone, came to the conclusion it had been the same forever, I wanted to try Android so I got a galaxy s. I went back to an iphone after I found I hated the keyboard and then found loads of worse options on the marketplace.

Then I got another iphone... got bored again and got an xperia arc, then back to iphone, then a galaxy s 2 then back to an iphone (the damn thing couldn't even do dtmf tones properly which took some explaining when I couldn't get on conference calls) then finally a pair of lumia 800s and finally...

Back to an iphone.

Just my 2p, you can't be right or wrong with opinion I get that but I'm just saying as he's clearly been happy with iPhones that perhaps he's like me and thats the best option for him.

All that said I was very close to buying a One X recently and I will probably give a GS3 a whirl but thankfully I now work somewhere where I'm obliged to have an iPhone so I can't get too far away from safety :)

I also spent 4 months with WP7.

It looks lovely, the marketplace is dreadful (there isn't even a bbc news app, angry birds is about £3 and the twitter implementation is dreadful) and IMO the novelty wears off rapidly.

Yes there is a BBC news app. Its not by the BBC, but thats hardly WP fault! I have been using it for at least a year.

Personally, I love WP. Lots of people do not as its a completely different interface.

Can't stand WP, it's nice for a day. Oooh nicely animated menus. After a day, ok bored of that just load the app already. I take all animations off my HTC so everything is instant and snappy.

well you could argue it is because the market share is so low there's no incentive to develop one.

I agree with the chap who said it was good for a day.. with me it was good for a couple of months but eventually I just found it lacking in depth.

You are making money through your ex-wife? This is a change from the norm. For divorced many everywhere (I am not one) I hope you do very well. As for getting rid of the iPhone, good riddance to bad rubbish.

I have to agree with Matt's sentiments in here (however unpopular they may be).

I find myself buying Android phones for the hardware more than the software, such as the One X.

It's all opinion at the end of the day but for app quality, stability and just a general quality feel I don't think you can beat iOS at the moment, and I don't see that changing.

I'm probably the only person on here who would be quite happy on either though... I don't see a big problem either way.

Ah-ha! Whoops!

In that case OP, rinse her for all you can :p

haha we are both good friends, we split up on mutual terms, so no one will be ripped off on either side. i just wanted to know if £250 was too much or not enough for the iphone 4 as its not the latest model.

is there any differences in android from phone to phone, or is android much the much?

there are hude spec differences and there are differences in the whole skinning thing such as touchwiz (bleurgh) and HTC sense (better but still not amazing), if you must go android then something you can either root and flash as stock android or even better comes that way (such as the nexus devices) I would say is preferable, then you don't get carrier bloatware and lengthy drawn out carrier testing of updates.

Whichever side of the fandroid/isheep debate you sit on you can't argue that iOS updates are much cleaner than android, you get it when apple says so and it does what apple says rather than waiting forever for a carrier to test/reskin a skin etc with as with android.

I had a GS2 running stock and my gf has just been given an orange GS2 by her work, I swear I barely recognise it!

If you want stock Android, then that's what the Nexus devices are for. Simples. The rest of the Android phones are extra choices which carriers get to customise to promote their own brand, amongst other things.

OP: I would sell the iPhone and get the One X, you'll be surprised how good it is! You wont get anything near the iPhone quality for £250 new or used, you'll just end up having a sub-par experience.

so an iphone is the best bet as it is what it is and nothing else. everything will be compatible, because its the only device. whereas with android there is the potential for lack of features and compitibility of certain things.

I'd say so but then I think my opinion is clear. I'd say the closest you'll get to an iphone experience would be a nexus device but the One X and SGS3 are bound to be great devices but then they're a similar price to a 4S.

Yeah, I don't like this myself.

you don't have to update and in the context of what I said you're basically saying rather than have it whenever it's ready you'd rather wait a random amount of time for your carrier to say yes/no to an update?

And anyway, why not? I get for jailbreakers its an issue but they know what they're doing and don't update?

The SGSII for £350 new is easily on par with a 4S.

horse for courses, I disagree but then I would. Spec wise the SGSII probably wipes the floor with a 4S so yeah for £350 it's a lot of phone.

Well in much the same way as the chef didn't want you to ruin the experience of what he'd spent ages developing then preparing for you and then have you wandering about going on about how rubbish the restaurant was I expect Apple don't want people using some half built option on their handset which then causes it to crash and then they receive the blame.

Call me old fashioned but I feel like chefs know how to cook, HTC/Samsung/Apple know how to make phones, Google/Apple know how to make software etc.

Part of my dislike of android comes from the fact I couldn't resists the urge to root/tweak my handsets and the fact the market is such pot luck with whether you're going to get a decent app or not I found myself constantly ending up with a phone I'd either half bricked myself or had made unstable myself.

I don't get this whole "apple dictate how to use a phone" thing, with the amount of apps available thats just not true. They dictate how you text/call/browse etc but thats called product design and it's something a lot of people think they're very good at!

You wouldn't go into a car showroom and say I'll take it but I want pink leather and square wheels with peanut butter brakes.. don't you dare dictate to me how I use it! :P
