its not as if they make it illegal, plenty of android manufacturers lock their handsets down pretty tight too. Just like with any product they release it when they consider it finished but after that you're free to do whatever you want. I pretty much make my living out of that!

I don't get what you're getting at, you either install apps that are available to make changes or you go off piste and jailbreak/root or use workarounds like I do for making my own ringtones etc. I don't see how android and iOS are that different in that respect?

The fact you have to jailbreak the iphone to get the same freedom you get with standard android makes it frustrating for people like me. Stuff like customisable homescreen drag and drop file transfer, change my message app, dialer app, copy movies across without converting, download apks and install it etc etc.

No real beef against Apple - they're making lots of cash so their business model is sound. Just its too much effort for me having to do things their way. Add that to no sd cards its a massive downer for me.

It looks lovely, the marketplace is dreadful (there isn't even a bbc news app, angry birds is about £3 and the twitter implementation is dreadful) and IMO the novelty wears off rapidly.

Yes there is. No it isn't, it's 79p. I'll agree it's not the best.

The best thing for you to do is try out some phones. Spend a good while in a phone shop and just see how you get on with them. It's your decision, you need to try the phones. What one person says is awesome you might think is tripe. Go and try them.

yep, totally agree like I say, horses for courses. I guess I'm lucky that I either like, or have become completely used to the iPhone dialler and message apps etc makes it somewhere I feel totally at home.

Like I say, the android handsets I've had I've normally ruined by having all these tweaking options :)

I'm joking, I did enjoy having the options but my personal feeling is Apple have probably obsessed over everything that much the stock stuff is pretty good for most people anyway. I found things like the text app/keyboard quite poor on my SGS2 which was ok because I could find a new one but then I wound up trying half a dozen keyboards and in the end I realised I was trying to make it like the iphone one lol.

bad example I guess but I was shocked by how expensive a lot of the games were, to me a mobile app becomes quite a considered purchase once it's over £1 and plenty of the windows games were well over that.

And no there isn't! There's a 3rd party app which is a million miles away from the polish of the iOS official app.

So what if it isn't made by the BBC themselves? It still exists and it works fine. Just because it isn't the same as what is on IOS and Android doesn't mean it doesn't exist does it?

no but it means it's not as good! Don't get me wrong for a 3rd party app its very good but I'd assume it would be better as an official app.

Anyway, I've no real beef with WP7, I jumped in with both feet and sold my 4S to use a pair of Lumia 800s I was so impressed but eventually the novelty wore off a bit and the niggles started to get the better of me.

I don't really think that's a good assumption to make. Plenty of people on other platforms like using unofficial Twitter apps because they prefer them.

I agree with you on the point that WP7 is not perfect, but I don't think any OS will ever be perfect. I'm very much looking forward to WP8 however, and seeing what extras it brings.

Well in much the same way as the chef didn't want you to ruin the experience of what he'd spent ages developing then preparing for you and then have you wandering about going on about how rubbish the restaurant was

It kinda backfired then didn't it. It was horrible and I often told people what a terrible place it was.

You wouldn't go into a car showroom and say I'll take it but I want pink leather and square wheels with peanut butter brakes.. don't you dare dictate to me how I use it! :P

If I tell them I want pink leather, a good company would tell me "no problem sir". Would you buy a car that someone else got to choose the colour scheme?

thanks, good example :)

No, a completely bespoke, bonkers expensive company would, I'm prepared to lay a fairly large bet on the fact you don't drive a bespoke car!

And the chef didn't want you in the restaurant, you went somewhere else.. choice. You didn't manage to get him to completely reconfigure his restaurant to suit your taste which suits my point perfectly?

Anyway to be honest given your sig I doubt we're going to agree so lets just settle on the fact I'm right :p

What on earth are you talking about? 'Completely reconfigure his restaurant'?!?! By asking for ketchup. Yes, I wont bother discussing it with you any further if this is your best.

Yes, I like Android. Yes, I don't like Apple. THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS. I didn't decide to not like Apple and then look for reasons. They want to say how I should enjoy something, like the chef, which is ridiculous. Simple as that.

Jailbreaking is great until you find that a load of apps don't work like Sky Go, Lovefilm and even my work email checks for jailbroken devices.

well i have had a samsung galaxy apollo now for 3 days along with my iphone, and i must admit i cant really notice a huge difference (i know i cant get all the apps on the galaxy coz its a really low spec phone) so a better spec android phone might be a good alternative.

from what I can tell it seems to be people settle into one camp or the other, seeing as the chap has had a couple of iphones I'd guess it's fair to assume he likes it.

Basically I'd strongly suggest testing an android phone before shelling out a load of cash, thats all :)

that's what I did just bought a wee 7" tablet to test ICS and android in general.

It's got a good bit to go to get to iphone standard in terms of their store but I like it so far.

ok, been having a few issues with android. apps are crashing (coming up with a force close window), and it takes an age to read the sd card when turning on, so all my icons on the homepages dissapear. is this a phone thing or an android thing?

I'm having issues as well don't know if it's andriod or the tablet.

Also they want to really revamp the play store it's a complete mess. With sometimes 4 different versions of the same app on the store but with no way to decipher which is best suited to phone or tablet. For instance I downloaded BeyondPod for my tablet but when I started it up it told me that I was using the phone version and I should have downloaded "Beyond Pod for Honeycomb" instead.

I downloaded 6 kindle books last night and was reading two before going to bed power on this morning at work and they've all disappeared, need to redownload. They were on the internal SD card.

Same with podcasts some are still there others have deleted themselves :(

I've had 3 apps crash on me and my network wifi connection require a reboot as well.

I'm new to it and messing around so it's hard to say if it's me or the system or even the tablet that's screwing up....

Quick question though what file system should be the SD card. I put it to exFAT but now i can't see it in Win XP :(

When I tried to format via the tablet it said it was done but when i connected it to the pc it hadn't formatted at all (ie there was still all the data on it.)

I'm running ICS 4.0.3

Pretty much my experience. Although for balance I have been experiencing some issues updating my ipads too.

I'd say the marketplace is exactly the same experience for everyone. Some people might be better at spotting decent apps but everyone ends up seeing all the apps many of which are trial, ad supported or just plain rubbish.

The force close thing I had a lot but I'm sure that's not everyones experience.
