Simple and cheap system backup method?

Hi all,
I'm looking for some advice on creating some backups of my system. I'm mainly interested in making backups of my Win 7 boot drive (90Gb Vertex 2 SSD) and my application drive (320Gb hdd) as I have all my data copied onto multiple drives anyway.
Hardware wise I have a NAS unit (DLink DNS-320) with 2x 1TB drives in RAID 1 configuration and an external 1TB USB drive.
For basic data (photos, music etc) I use Windows SyncToy to keep duplicate copies on both the NAS and the USB drives but I don't currently have any proper way of restoring my system in the event of either of the internal drives failing.
I suppose the most basic approach would be to use something like Acronis Disk Image and just take full images of the drives and store them on the external drives but I was wondering if there is any other better way? At this point I'm only looking for software solutions (just had a baby so the finances wont stretch to new hardware :) ) but in the longer term I may consider a hardware approach.

So, anyone have any experience in this area?

TIA,

Ross
