simple fan question

my mate has an old P4 system with a very loud processor fan. he has asked me to replace it.

i have a stock intel fan that came (but was not used) with my new e8400 - will this fit my friend's P4?

and will i have to remove his motherboard in order to replace fan?

the heatsink wont but im sure you could mod the fan to fit or buy a new fan from oc uk

i would prefer to buy a 'proper' heatsink/fan that fits out of the box, rather than risk bodging a mod for my mate's pc.

forgive my ignorance, but is/was there a standard socket for the P4? or do i need to specifically identify my mate's cpu before i order (all i know is that it is a pentium 4)?
