Hi,

Can anyone give me simple step by step guide to connect 2 computers together to share information and access the Internet? There a millions of hits on Googel but all are complex and most include wireless.

Current Status:

Modern high spec (2 year) old PC running Vista with all updates installed and working fine. Connected to the Internet by a 4 port Netgear router.

I have just bought a laptop and want to be able to plug my laptop into the router so that I can easily transfer data between the 2 computers and also access the internet from my laptop. I do not need wireless at this stage, and my router is not wireless anyway.

A simple step by step for a hard wired connection would be most appreciated.

get 1 rj45 lan cable plug into one of the rj45 ports on the router then youve already got your desktop pluged in on another lan cable.

thats it! :D

to share files just right click the folders drives etc then jsut go to "my network places" and hopefully the computers will be there if not you can type the name of the computer into run/search eg \\server

Yes,

I am now connected to the Internet with both computers and when I go to control panel/networks I can see both computers on both machines.

However when I double click on the computer icon on either machine all I see is a printer icon. I there not a way to connect both computers so that I can see all the drives and drag and drop folders and files between them? When I right click a folder as suggested above there is not a "my network places" option on the menu.

Sorry for being dim!

You need to share the folders you want to see on the other machines.

Right click and select sharing from the popup menu on the folders or hard drives you want to make available on the network.
