Does anyone have any recommendations for a simple media player to play films stored on a local hard drive? It's for a non-techy person so I have the following requirements:

- Must have a remote
- Must work out of the box and be faff free, i.e. not kodi, and not a PC
- Must be able to play movies stored on local hard drive

I've tried plugging the HDD into the TV, but the interface is slow as hell and locks up all the time. I used to have a WDTV Live which would've been perfect, but that's discontinued now.

I know there are all sort of cheap Chinese boxes on ebay but no idea if they're any good.

You can still buy WDTV boxes online.

Most android boxes on Amazon will do playback through HDD.

Let me have a look, I may have one that you can have.

The OSCM Vero 4k is a purpose built box that gets great reviews and is available for about £100

Its runs OSCM which is a variant of Kodi but comes ready to work.
