Simple Networking Problem?!

Hi all! I wonder if anyone can help with this little problem that's been bugging me for months?

I have two Core2Duo (ie reasonably modern) Win7 computers joined by cable to a gigabit router. Everything works fine in terms of them seeing each other, streaming internet etc etc. But with one minor problem!

Computer 1 contains a hard drive full of artwork assets. When computer 2 uses any application that uses or opens these assets, it seems to stall and freeze for anything between 10-30 seconds every time the connection is first made in each respective program. It then holds a responsive connection for the period of time it is actively used. If the app is left for a period of time, it seems to sort of drop the handshake and the process must be repeated. (By the way during this process computer 1 is actively being used for surfing the internet etc, so it is not asleep and it's drives are already spun up).

Does this situation sound familiar to anyone by any chance?! Or can anyone offer any suggestions?!

Thanks!

Steve

In XP the WebClient service used to cause this kind of issue. Disabling through the services.msc sorted it. I don't know if this still is an issue in Win7. But its a simple check.

Hey! Thanks for the replies! Yup, absolutely certain it's not the drives hibernating as this *can* happen over a longer period of time, which does extend the delay even more (and you can clearly hear them spinning up in this situation).

I shall try disabling the webclient service later today and tell you if it fixes the issue - many thanks :-)

As a follow up to this, if I type 'net stop webclient' in a command prompt while windows is running, it tells me the webclient is not yet running, so I guess sadly, this is ruled out. Thanks for the suggestion though.
