Warning! Drunken posting approaching!
So...I'm finishing a pleasant meal of wholemeal bread, strong cheese and ale(*) while sitting in a comfortable chair in my comfortable home and enjpying knowing that I am free of work for 7 days. A very traditional English meal, so it had me thinking of high medieval England. People no doubt enjoyed bread and cheese and ale then, but they didn't have all the advantages of modern England on top. My house would amaze a medieval king, let alone a commoner like me. Turn a dial and rooms are heated. No fetching firewood, no delay, no smoke and ash. Click a switch and there's clear bright light. No fetching lamp oil for dim light in a small area. No expensive candles. I have large windows with panes of clear glass. Utterly impossible then - even the wealthiest people could at most afford a window or two of small pieces of semi-transparent glass held together by pieces of lead, a window almost as much lead as glass. I just washed some clothes. Or, rather, I didn't. I just put them in a machine that washed them for me while I drank ale and ate bread and cheese. I won't be at risk of starvation if there are a couple of bad harvests. I don't worry about plagues. My only concern right now is which of my many games to play. Or maybe buy another one - I've idly watched a bit of streaming of Rage 2 and that looks like fun.
Life is good.
So...what are your simple pleasures?
* Old Speckled Hen - not my favourite, but good. Very passable, Obadiah
