Hi, my girlfriend has a Virgin cable box for connecting to the internet. Basically her flat mate is moving out and she wants to know if she can get rid of the BT line rental she is currently paying, as she has no need for it. Do you need a BT landline to carry on using a Virgin box? Not too clued up on this. Thank you.

can she get rid of the phone package and still keep the broadband ? She is paying £11 a month for the phone line.

You do not need any form of telephone line for Virgin TV or Broadband so yes she can get rid of BT if she wants as long as we're talking cable TV/BBI (as you said in the first post).

Virgin is Cable, doesn't use a telephone line, especially not a BT one

You need to make sure which one shes talking about though, she may still be paying a line rental to virgin?

Indeed, to make your STB function, no phone line is required. However, to have a STB installed, you also have to sign up for the telephone line. You don't have to for Broadband though.

i have an stb. virgin+ infact, before that a regular box. i do not have a phoneline. that is all:) you used to have to have a phone line, but this was years ago.

From my understanding of this post. You dont need a telephone line from BT to use Virgin Media Cable Broadband. That it is it. Hope it clears this up.

It's not been the case since digital launched, not sure about the analogue only days but we're talking 7+ years of digital already in some area's.

Not for NTL it wasn't, you had to have phone and STB installed, up to 3 years ago, when mine was done. I have never had an analog STB. I guess the change is recent for ex NTL since they rebadged to Virgin.

Coming up to 2 years since I first had an STB (we're talking August 2006), I didn't need a phone then. Guess I was either lucky or things had changed.

Only time I've ever seen them suggest you need to take the phone line is if you want the 'free' channels, that is the box without a subscription. If subscribing to a package no phone line was required for me (we had XL BB + XL TV). 6 months in, however, they rang me and offered me a free phone line and unlimited local/national calls for 5p LESS than I was paying. Seemed odd, but we accepted it (and used it!!) and got billed 5p less as offered.

Currently only have BB, but move into a new property in a few months where hopefully I'll get XL BB + XL TV again.

As has been stated, check she doesnt have Virgin ADSL, if it is Virgin Cable then you can get rid of the BT phoneline.
