Hi guys,

I'm currently using the stock fan that came with my cpu (see sig for details) but I'm looking to upgrade the cooler for my cpu. Its the socket 775 connection and I'm looking for something which does the job a bit better than my current fan does. I'm not looking towards water cooled systems, just an improved air solution. Also I'd prefer the cooler to not have the push pin connections.

Thanks

Derek

I've had a wee look at a couple of the arctic cooling freezer series but haven't had enough time to take in the various ones to see which might suit. but my question is a few are the 4 push pin variety but I others like the arctic freezer xtreme cpu cooler I cant see how that will fix over the cpu? Can anyone supply any pics on how its done and how easy it is to fix on?

Thanks, I'll definitely have a look at your post when I get back from the football tonight. The budget aspect of things doesn't bother me as I'm just looking to improve on the cooling I have at the moment.

Right I've had a look at a few of the coolers mentioned and now Ive got a few questions.

Thermalright True Black 120 CPU Cooler

By the looks of things there is a compatibility issue with gigabyte mobos that require a separate backplate? Also I would need to buy either one or two fans to go with the cooler?

Tuniq Tower 120-LFB CPU Cooler

Did you require a separate backplate fro5tie as mentioned in one of the replies or did it come boxed with the cooler?

Think the others mentioned, the sunbeam and noctua look straightforward enough with just the fixing to the cpu required since they come with fans etc.

I'm sort of appreciating how big the 1200 case is although I'm sure I read somewhere someone had a tight fit even with the batcave surrounding it all :D

Fro5tie has a similar mobo to mine but his is the ddr2 rather than the ddr3 version.

Thanks for the replies. While looking at that last one I saw test results on tweaktown for the Noctua NH-C12P and I think thats the one I'm going to go for since its available on OCuk and appears to give the best performance out of all the coolers reviewed.

Once I've got that ordered along with a cable extension to tidy up inside my case a bit more I'll post some pictures here when I'm fitting it all together :D

EDIT : Anyone had any experience with the cooler before?

well the delivery company failed to deliver today as is mentioned on their website, combined with me forgetting i should get free P&P from my forum membership as well. hopefully I'll get my cooler tomorrow along with refunded P&P from a failed delivery, if i wanted to use second class royal mail i would have without having to pay for next day delivery charges

Well here goes.........

The cooler finally arrives. The instructions were pretty clear so went together with only a couple of minor errors (me being dense :p)

A little dusty on the existing fan so think I need to get the old compressed air out next time I pop the case open.

Fan fully fitted.

Did a quick temp reading after fitting and didn't notice too much difference sitting idle from the existing fan. I also ran a quick 2 min stress test and the temps barely got to 40degrees so I'm looking forward to a longer test to see how effective the cooler is.

I think I may turn the cooler round 90 degrees as its a bit tight against one of my ram modules though. apart from that a quick and simple change of cpu cooler.

Just did a half hour stress test with the cooler to check the performance and I'm quite happy with the results.

Temps across cores settling down now to

32 36 28 28

The second sensor appears to be stuck so giving a false reading :(

Never noticed that before.

I think its cos I've got the Gigabyte GEST software running and that does have the cpu throttling on it along with a couple of other features. Normally I just switch it on and leave it running.

EDIT :

I'll try prime 95 again but with the GEST disabled so I'll see what change that makes to my temps etc.

Ok I've had a wee look around on my pc and found the GEST in windows hasn't had its cpu throttling enabled so I popped into the BIOS for a look.....

Advanced BIOS

Cpu Enhanced Halt (C1E) - cpu will enter c1 state and reduce core clock to system bus ratio and VID

Cpu Thermal Monitor 2 (TM2) - when cpu die temperature reach threshold, both core clock ration and voltage will be reduced.

Cpu EIST function - EIST driver manages clock and VID to best serve the thermal, performance and power requirements.

PC Health

Cpu smart fan control - Cpu fan is always running at highest speed.

Cpu smart fan mode - auto

Also the BIOS is reading the Cpu temp as 26 with the system at 30 degrees C.

I'm assuming that I have to disable all those parts I listed under the Advanced BIOS but the fan control stuff can remain as it is under the PC Health section?

Checked also in the BIOS as the CPU clock speed is only 2.66 rather than the full 2.83 as the chip is supposed to be.

All advice welcome as I don't have a scoobies since this was my first ever pc build :D

If you're overclocking and are still trying to find a max, it's best to turn SpeedStep and C1E off as they can b0rk things, but once you've found a stable clock, leaving them on is fine on a modern motherboard.

At the moment I'm just testing my new cooler. Overclocking will be the next step but I've got to read up on it as I dont have a clue where to start. As mentioned by Fro5tie my cpu is being throttled just now to around 2Ghz - 2.66 during load so I'm wanting to release that to take an accurate measure of temps during load at 2.83 which my processor is supposed to do 'out of the box'

I think you've got the fan on the wrong way round on the heatsink. That's going to be sucking air off of the heatsink rather than blowing into it. Looking at the manual on the noctua website, the fan needs to be the other way around. Should get the temps a little lower :)

Well i did say i had a couple of minor problems during the cooler exchange :p
Time to take the fan off and put it the right way up now lol.....could have sworn most companies prefer their logo to show rather than up against a cooler
