hi guys,

this won't really help with my overclocking, but i am just technically curious about why this is:

• my cpu was stable at 3.2gig, 1.4V & 400x8

• i then moved to 356x9 to move to the "9" multiplyer (since i couldn't seem to push that 400 any higher, must have hit my top end, sound about right for a DS3P?) - and it was unstable, computer kept restarting so i added a bit extra voltage and all was well...

so my question (apart from the bracketed one about the top end) is why would 400x8 require slightly less power than 356x9 when they are practically the same cpu speed? maybe running in 1:1 with the memory is more efficient or summat crazy (but interesting) like that?

356x9 is 4MHz higher than 400x9. There has to be a threshold where a particular voltage is no longer enough. Looks like it is between 3200 and 3204MHz :)

hmm ok... i think this is about as good as i'm going to get without the cores running @ >65 on full load...

which would be better to run out of 400x8 and 356x9? 400x8 seems the neater solution but i dunno... does it make a difference?

Depends on how high you want to run your RAM. 4MHz on your CPU is nowt in the grand scheme of things and there is every chance Windows and your POST screen will drop the 4MHz in rounding :p

i meant more on a technical level is there any advantage to running the same cpu speed but with a higher fsb and lower multi? or is it exactly the same for all intents and purposes?

When you increase the FSB you are in effect overclocking the Northbridge, so a lower FSB means a cooler Northbridge. However most modern motherboards have pretty good cooling for the NB so it is not a major point.
