I've been using virtualdub to transcode, alter framerates and apply filters etc to my videos but it can't do things like transitions, adding credits, chapters etc.

Is there any software that can do this that is simple to use? I tried to use movie maker, but microsofts amazing software failed to even load a basic mpeg2 video and then subequently crashed.

Are you on Vista? vista movie maker has issues but you can DL the older moviemaker for free off MS, I did this and works excellent.

Sony Vegas is simple. (IMO) I was making transitions and effects with no hassle and no prior experience.

I don't think you'll find and 'free' video editors for Windows (other then Movie maker)

There's a few on Linux though, Kino, Cinelerra + more. Not tried these though.
