Simple video editor

Thanks for the help. Tried this, still exporting a lower quality video. The first export at same quality as source which was a 200mb file ended up as 1GB file.

Not sure I followed your instructions exactly but it did crop the canvas down as intended. I might it through media encoder see if I can get it down.

You can't choose the same quality as source (you can in Avid) - 'same as source' use just for frame size, frame rate etc. The codec and Bitrate is still defined by you.

Basically anything you can do in Media Encoder, you can do in Prem export. So spend time getting your export settings right in Prem, rather than putting your already wrong export through another transcode.

I can find no export setting thats close in quality that doesn't make the file massive. Some say it's due to constant frame rate. I'm clueless.

I have one ancient video editor which outputs an old wmv codec which seems to get closer to the file size without destroying the image quality. Transcoding isn't an issue for me. These are mostly not for public consumption, internal presentations, 30-120 mins long.

I'm flip flopping between Apple and Windows videos editors. All oddly unintuitive, once you want to anything vaguely different.

Transcoding isn't an issue for me.

Transcoding is an issue for you. If you export, you've transcoded it. You then say you want to convert that again, which is a second transcode. You risk quality loss each time.

Set it to .MP4, 2-pass VBR, 4mpbs target, 6mbps max. Set the audio to 192kbps if there is any. It will tell you in the summary what size it predicts the file will be. Run the export and assess the quality. Raise / lower the bit rate as needed.

Higher bitrate = higher quality & larger size.
Lower Bitrate = lesser quality & smaller size.

Find the balance you're happy with.

I mean I happy with the quality I get with transcoding. It's not Oppenheimer.

It's only one in 20 videos I have to edit like this. It will be watched over the network it can't be a 1 GB file. Got it to 400mb on the Apple. Have it to 300mb on my ancient editor.

I'll try your suggestions though. Appreciate the advice. I'm learning. Previous version of Premiere wouldn't work on my workstation. This latest one seems to though..

If you're happy, then great.

Although you are wasting your time. You could just get it right first time ;)

I should also say, once you've found that balance, you don't need to find it again. You can save that setting and always return to it.

The issue is the tools I have get blocked or updated. So you are forced to change how you do it.
