My copy of Vista Ultimate (64bit) should be coming today, and i was wondering how do i install it with XP also on same drive? Basically i want a dual boot.

Does it give you the option when installing to create a hard drive partition for Vista? or will i have to do that myself before installing?

Well, I installed my Vista and XP Pro together. just used partition Magic 8 to make a small 20Gb partition and then installed Vista onto that.

I am not sure if Vista allows you to partition, I don't think it does.

Can the trial version of Partition Magic be used to do that?

When Vista is installed on the partition will the system automatically recognize two OS's on boot up?

No, the trial version can't be used. It's just a demo of the software.

Yes, when you boot up, Windows will ask you:

Boot ealier version of Windows
Boot Microsoft Vista.

Gives you the choice. :)

Vista creates its own 'unique' Boot manager, giving you an option to boot into it or 'Earlier' version of Windows.

Being 'unique', if you want to remove/etc it (Vista), it might not be that simple :( Hence I recommend you download this ;)

Whn i installed XP, i created two partiones, i split the disk in half, 40gb XP, and 40GB for vista, then just installed XP first, then did all updates for XP, then went and installed vista on the second partion. It created the boot loader where it defaults to vista, but lets you choose XP if you want.

Cheer for the help :)

I'm partitioning now, and doing what you did chrislusty - half of my 74GB drive for XP and half for Vista. just one thing, when partition it asks if i want the partition Logical or Primary? what should i use?

Logical!

Got Vista... and it wont install on the partition. I boot from the CD, follow the onscreen instructions, when at the part to choose a partition/drive to install Vista on i select the partition i made for it and get something like "this partition does not match the criteria needed to install vista on"

What do i need to do?? It's a 40GB partition, Logical, NTFS format...

Ok i changed th drive partition to Primary because i read that Vista will only install on a Primary partition and not Logical. But it still wont install! same message as before. why??

Ice On Fire: How did you make your partition with Partition Magic? What settings?

should just be a case of highlighting the partion you want to install to then click next! cant remember its been 3 days since i installed vista.
