Hello!

Software developer by trade, but been asked to create a website for a friend. Slightly off the pace with easiest routes of implementation these days so after advice.

- Do people still use Wordpress as a simple CMS, or has Joomla / Drupal or something else become a better standard?

- Needs possibly a gallery, I used to always just use Flickr, but is there a better option? Wordpress plugin I guess?

- Anything else I need to think about upfront, SEO, Analytics, etc?

Cheers!

WordPress isn't a CMS, but will suit well for a website of that type! Yes there are several WordPress plugins for galleries and what not.

If you want a full professional looking website, rather than a blog type website then I'd go with DotNetNuke or Joomla.
You should yourself, download Microsoft WebMatrix which allows you to install any web platform offline on your home computer allowing you to give each one a try see what you like the look of.

WordPress is probably one of the easiest to get use to and use, however it comes with security flaws, spam and what not.

Cheers, I'm on OSX so can't use the Microsoft WebMatrix platform, I'll download those suggested and give them a try. Wordpress allows you to manage content and the like, so I consider that to be a simple CMS, but stand corrected!

Yeah I see most of the open source offerings seem to suffer with security issues, but I guess it's just a case of keeping it upto date.

Sorry to butt in here but are there any 'standout' wordpress gallery plugins?

I'm building a wordpress based site and a half-decent gallery plugin certainly wouldn't go a miss :D

Use Wordpress mate. It's got everything built for you. Don't use Drupal - it's far too complicated for smaller websites. And Joomla is becoming a dinosaur.

WP has stacks of plugins and Nextgen is a good one. You add the plugin, configure it, and populate it. Some themes will have their own gallery system so you might not even need Nextgen.

Guys, with wordpress is it possible to manually setup a series of accounts (in my case, for the committee of a sports club) and then prevent anyone else from contributing... if club members want to register to comment, they can use the adjacent forum ;)

I want a wordpress front-end to act as a sort of official noticeboard for the club.

Thinking about it, I suppose I need to prevent anyone from registering in the first place and then add the committee members in myself; does that make sense?

You can add users manually, and assign them certain parameters such as admin, contributor, editor, moderator, subscriber. Go to Users in the admin panel and add new.

There is no sign up box on the main pages by default unless you add one via plugin, so you're sorted already.

Oh right, so its closed off to start with? Its not a free for all as with most forum packages :)

I haven't had a proper play with it yet, but from what I've seen, can't random visitors comment on posts by actual users?!

They can freely comment but then that comment has to be approved by the administrator or moderator before it is seen publically. Great if you get a lot of spam like my website does.
