I'm I right in thinking that I can connect a console to my PC's ethernet port and it will be able to access my wireless network and the internet using the PC as a proxy server?

Currently my router is upstairs and the PC is downstairs next to where the console is going when I get it.

Don't think you mean proxy server there. What you more likely mean is simply bridging the connections. To do so, go to Start>Control Panel>Network Connections

Then, while holding down Control, select the ethernet and wireless connections, then right click and click bridge. Once that's done, it should all work quite nicely and your Xbox will be able to access the internet.

Hope this helps, null :)
