SIMslot in my lappy - how to?

Behind you... Naked!
I got a couple of sim slots in a couple of laptops and never given them too much thought until now.

My main lappy is a Clevio W650SF 3.9Ghz i7 and I am stuck in hospital and so the need for internet is now quite high to lower this boredom bar.

Anyway, Im borrowing my mothers mobile wifi dongly thingy and the sim does fit into the slot, but the laptop sort of did a huge nuffin at all.

Can anyone give me anything that will guide me in any direction I need to go, in order to use it or is it just something that I will never get the use out of?

Thanks in advance.

Yup as above. you will find that the socket is usually fitted but the cabling and modem isn’t. Depending on the manufacturer the 3g mini pci card can be several hundreds of pounds!

Doesn't the hospital have wifi? It's standard in the three main hospitals in my area and I'm in backwater wales!

Cisco APs littered all over the ceiling :)

If it's anything like all the other extras they'll be charging through the backside for just about enough download credit to check your emails.

It's totally free here at least, it's not run by the Hospital itself it's run by O2 in two of the hospitals and council based(JANET) in the third.

Just requires a small signup all of which can be fake information, get a cheap VPN if you're hesitant about the security(you should be using any public WIFI) and wala, internet access.

It's even quite impressive here, 15-20mb speed and sub 10 latency to UK london based servers.

Hospital Wifi?

Im in Glan Clwyd in NorthWales. Its a nice and simple reply of HAHA or just plain ignoring me when I ask if I can have the password for the hidden wifi thats been up in this place for over 2 years - I know, thats how long I have been in and out of the hell hole.

The Hospitals across the North wales will soon be getting Wifi for sure, but I dont know when.

Modem bits in Laptop not connected etc

Sure, this is possible, as there does not seem to be any way for me toknow if the laptop knows there is or is not a sim in the thing?

Its a brand new lappy so Im not going inside it, and I have been in touch with them that sold it to me, who have been in touch with clevio and I am waiting for them to getback to me to see if there is any info.

My mother has taken hers back now and as an early birthday pressie, she bought me a wifi dongle... not quite as good as hers is, but at least it has got me online.

Weirdly, even though its telling me that its connected at 21.9MB, a check withspeedtest.net has so far not broken over 1.3k and yewchoob is fine to watch but downloading anything is a non possible option.

Weird.

Semi part time solution, but I really want to go more into the thoughts of using a sim in the laptop and so I am going to get the missus to bring in any other laptop that has such a slot, so I can have a play even if this one wont do it, I should still be able to have a giggle with one at least?

Does anything show up in device manager? If there's nothing there it probably doesn't exist.

If it does happen to exist then you'll need to have the management/configuration software installed before it'll do anything.

That's quite a surprise!

Exactly, if you can't see the mobile broadband network adapter in network centre or device manager it won't ever work as there physically isn't one. From experience they always fairly easy to get to, either under keyboard or base panel.

The closest hospital to me is the Queen's Hospital in Romford... and there's no wifi service there at all. The walls also seem to be incredibly thick enough to even kill mobile signals!

Check BIOS before giving up but on a lot of laptops the cellular modem hardware isn't actually included unless you specifically choose it as an option.

If it is in the BIOS as an option sometimes its listed under a funny name begining with R (its the name of a commonly used modem hardware brand) that I can't remember off the top of my head.

Ok, thanks for all the input guys.

Aye S.Wales always has the better end of the stick compared to us... We have the sh???y end as usual. Thanks for reminding me.

Ok so yes, I have looked thoroughly inthe BIOS and sure enough, I have to chose between the mSATA and the SIM, but not both.

Im running this on the mSATA right now, so there is nothing I can do about that for now, but I will for sure, give it a proper play sometime... Very soon.

It may or may not work or do what I need it to, but hey,its got to be worth the laugh, if nothing else.

Im just upset that this TMobile thing is so disgustingly rubbish. I used up my entire 3 months Fair useage policy data allowance in just 9 hours due to Windows updates FFS! and now I am on a 2K rate signal... SHEESH! - never going to bother with TMobile after this.

Whats worse is that the 4G light is constantly on now... Hows that for irritating.
