Went from a 4000 CPU and dropped in a X 4600. Shows fine and working in task manager. But playing counterstrike source. The game play is not smooth. As if its lagging which I am sure it is not.
Could this be due to me not installing the AMD Optimizer software?

Thanks

the game is probally switching from core to core making it laggy
i would install amd optimizer software

the optimiser will stick the game on one core making it less laggy
or you could do i manually and set it inifinity in task manager

Thanks all that seemed on a short test to have sorted it. Just hope I don't get some of the probles others have discussed using optimizer.

Cheers

Core 2 Duo's do not have this problem.

Aye, shared L2 cache for the win.

Is that why they dont?

I mean, I only noticed the issues when I was playing back some of my Midi Files through WinAmp, and I installed the CPU Optimizer and the issue went away, but this has not happened with the C2D.

So, is the whole problem due to the AMD having dual core?

Yup. When an X2 has a thread switch between cores then the cache of the other core probably won't contain the data it needs for that thread so it has to stop execution and read it from RAM again (expensive operation compared to a L2 cache read). In C2D this isn't a problem because both cores share the same L2 cache and can both access it at the same time.

There are many other reasons why games can run badly on SMP systems though, most of these centered around timing issues - but I doubt the Source engine is falling victim to these as it's a pretty new engine.

Sweet. Never thought about it actually, but its pretty obvious.

Like I said, I only had issues with playing MidiFiles through WinAmp... NOTHING else gave any stick, but that certainly did, especially when I tried to show the missus my projects ( She does not like going into the lan room - PCs take enough of my life away as it is ).
