well sticking in the extra 4GB is proving to be a learning curve for me. Should have realised I would have had to lower the CPU back to its stock speed because it seems 8GB DDR2 800MHz RAM will not allow the machine to run properly without BSODs everytime. So for now I am leaving it at 2.4GHz.

If anyone is able to tell me how I can overclock my CPU back to 3.5GHz or 3.6GHz with 8GB RAM that would be great. My specs are:

ASUS P5Q-E mobo
Intel Q6600 CPU
Corsair XMS2 8GB (4x2GB) DDR2 800MHz RAM
XFX ATI 4870X2 2GB GDDR5 GPU
Arctic Cooling Xtreme CPU Cooler

The settings I had on 4GB was FSB 445, VCore 1.45v, CPU Ratio 8, DRAM voltage 1.8v (altho I did leave it at auto at one point). This would overclock the RAM to 891MHz and I think thats where the problem lies. Do I raise the DRAM voltage or not?

Thanks guys :)

Have you loked at NB voltage? VDIMM (DRAM) voltage shouldn't need to be changed, but to identify this, you can run the new kit on it's own with the settings of the old overclock and see if they work at that clock.

Then, pop your old ram back in and increase your NB voltage a bit. More RAM = more strain on your memory controller.

You see I was looking at the NB and thinking should I change that or not? I have never had to touch it before when I had 4GB in the machine. but I will try what you have suggested and see what happens there...how much voltage should the NB be set to for stability? if I leave the DRAM at auto and just change the NB this should do the trick right? thanks :)

someone elsewhere suggested lowering the timings so I will try that and also raise the NB voltage...thanks for the input guys I will let u know how I get on :)

Yes but you are using an E8400 CPU which is dual core...where as I am using a Q6600...so it maybe something to do with the CPU being bottlenecked by the RAM timings and such...but again I dont know if that is the case...

I had a stable overclock with 400x8 with only 2 sticks installed. But with 4 sticks I have to lower clock to 333x9 as the Nb gets too hot and requires too many volts to run 1600 with 4 sticks.

i too had 3.6Ghz with 2sticks but when i went to 4sticks best i could get out of my board was 3.33Ghz (see sig)

I knew it...thanks guys. That does tell me getting an extra 4GB was pretty much a bad idea. I have taken the other 4GB out for now and gone back to having 4GB with 3.6GHz on the CPU. but my question is, have you noticed a slight difference in performance when it comes to playing games and that with 8GB as you did with 4GB?

Well i upgraded my graphics card at the same time as upgrading my ram.. so i've not really got a good reference point. Having said that i do a fair amount of photoshop and video editing so the ram helps a lot with that.

Most games don't even use up 4gb of ram, so the higher CPU clock speed would be better for games. I am waiting for the 2 x 4gb 1066mhz kits to come out, Kingston have brought a 800mhz one out.
