Since when did upgrade editions stop working on a clean reinstall?

I've installed Windows 7 a few times before using an upgrade edition and performing a custom install (formatting the HDD) with no problems. However, I reinstalled Windows 7 Professional a few days ago, the first time it asked for a product key it said the key was invalid so I skipped it and started a trial. It's just reminded me to activate and I tried again and it's come up with the error, "the software licensing service determined that this specified product key can only be used for upgrading, not for clean installations."

I rather stupidly bought a full version of Vista when it was released, but I don't have access to it at the moment and I don't really want to go through the hassle of reinstalling again, plus I'd like to do a clean install not an upgrade.

Do I have any options? I know it's possible to crack Windows but I've always shied away from that because it's such a core piece of software.

You can reinstall over the top of win 7 in trial mode using an upgrade disk and still do a full format and reinstall have done it twice now on my pc.

I'll probably do that then. I remember now that when I formatted my disk for the first time I accidentally installed Windows 7 on the wrong partition so I quit the installation and restarted it again without a Windows installation, which is probably why I got the error. Thanks.

EDIT: Do you know if you can create a new partition, install Windows 7 on that (so you have two Windows 7 installations side by side)?
