Hello,

I went to Singapore and Hong Kong last Summer and armed with my then newly purchased D5200 and a crash course in photography watching Youtube vids by Mike Browne, DigitalRev, Matt Granger and reading Understanding Exposure I set out to use some of my holiday time to put into practice what I had soaked in...here are what I believe to be the best of the 1000s of shots I had accumulated :p

Loads of nice shots there, love the light trails. Was in Singapore years ago so was nice seeing shots of it again.

Thanks. Was in Singapore for 6 days following some advice and research as it's relatively small but to be honest would have preferred an extra week. I love eating and there was just so much choice there :D
great shots, 2 & 9 pick of the bunch for me
Thanks, I'm trying to decide which to print and frame to an approx 30 inch horizontal size. 9 is one of my faves but I do like the reflections in 25 and the rocks in 27.

:)

Great shots, love the long exposure night shots with the streaking headlights. Were you using a tripod or just propping on handrails etc?

Shot 10 looked pretty familiar, till I remembered I'd taken that exact shot myself last year :p

Haha nice. :) Yeh all the night shots above I had the camera on a tripod. I'm not too keen on the excessive red light trails but I had no choice but to expose for 30 secs otherwise the trails were too faint under the street lighting. I was chuffed with the bungee trail in 23 though :D

I really wanted the following shot...

...but I visited the area 3 times and couldn't figure out where he stood for that shot. I think he must have ventured off the Tsing Yi Nature Trail through the trees and down the steep embankment towards the maintenance steps/path half way down the embankment but I wasn't going to get lost or risk falling down in the dark lol.

Found the location :D

So yeh...thru the trees at the very top and then down that rather steep embankment via the catchwater drain as the photographer mentioned in the comments.

Well here's my critique...

1. I should have used a smaller aperture to get the star effect on the bridge lights

2. I like this shot because theres a subject matter for each 3rd although I do realise there is normally one subject when using the rule of thirds

3. Should have stepped back a few steps so that the heart left by the newly weds isn't so close to the bottom of the shot

4. Love this. I took about 150 ish shots of the red pandas in no flash mode because I was still learning and just wanted to focus on composition at the time. This was the best in terms of focus and composition.

5. Love this too. The bokeh for a kit lens is not bad and I love meerkats. :D

6. Not sure about the distracting branch end although it being out of focus helps

7. Could have worked out better if I shot at a different angle as the branch from left to right makes the shot a bit flat

8. Bird on the left is out of focus. Should have used aperture priority mode rather than no flash

9. I like the reflections and it has my favourite skyscraper in Hong Kong (IFC)

10. Shot upwards mainly to leave out the tourists. Shot is OK

11. Not sure why I put this up actually. Not much to like about it. Too much going on behind the merlion

12. Someone's hand and a bush or something intruding in on the far left and smog ruin this shot but such a popular shot it probably wouldn't have been anything special if conditions were perfect

13. I like this. Used manual focus to ensure the clock face was perfectly focused. Maybe a tad overexposed

14. I like the imposing bases of the skyscrapers but due to the lighting in this location I had to use a long exposure so that the car light trails stood out but in the end the trails don't look as good as say trails on a unlit motorway

15. Couldn't avoid the lamp post and again the trails don't show up that well

16. I thought this would be a great location due to the potential for light trails but in the end I'm not keen on the composition. Too much going on

17. I prefer the day time shot of this to be honest now. Two red taxis were leading the traffic

18. Calming influence to this shot

19. I like the leading line

20. Got to photoshop out that sign

21. Wasn't physically able to but wanted to get more sky in and leave out the golden pavilion

22. Thinks this may have worked out better if I shot this later on in the night but glad I got the wheel in

23. Don't like the composition but wanted the light trail by the bungee

24. I have no idea what the green light trails were caused by :p

25. Love the reflections here but should have zoomed in or shot lower to exclude the tree to the top

26. Exposed this for a few seconds to create the motion in the clouds and to smooth out the water but anything I could have done to prevent the skyscrapers leaning towards the middle?

27. This shot to me would have been perfect if it wasn't for the row of trees between the rocks and pagoda

28. I like this a lot. Love the marble sky and the reflections and the rule of thirds applied here
