Heading to Singapore for the weekend in May. Wife has a work thing on the Monday to Wednesday so we are going early on the Friday. Any recommendations for a hotel for the Friday and Saturday nights? We are sorted ok for the other nights. Not been before but been to other Asian cities plenty. Just want an area with some good food and some decent bars really. Any must things to do?
Thanks.

Have stayed in Studio M in Clark quay for 10 days which was fine.
Stayed in Grand Park City hall for 2 nights which was better, and a short walk to raffles for a Singapore sling.

Both close to bars and restaurants

We stayed at the Pan Pacific quite a few years ago as a treat on our way back from seeing family in Australia. It was lovely. Amazing beakfast, you could get anything you wanted (cliche, I know) but anything from roti curry, omelettes, sushi, ramen, full English. But all done tremendously well. You could practically get lost going off to find stuff :p

Service was amazing.. our TV box didnt work when we first got there. We called down and bearing in mind we were on like the 17th floor or something the guy was there with a replacement in about 3 minutes. Swapped it out, good to go. Very slick. I can't remember the location exactly but it was round the corner from the Marina and right near one of the smaller hawker markets.

As for what to do, in 3-4 days there the worst meal we had was at a restaurant. Just eat in the hawker markets. They're great and dirt cheap. Rather than paying for entry to the MBS viewing platform we went to the bar and bought a couple of drinks which worked out at a similar price, although not 'quite' as good a view (as you look down on the people on the viewing platform). The botanic gardens were nice, but beyond that it was a lot of temples, food etc. Just don't litter :p

Anywhere near Clark Quay or Robertson Quay and you're set for bars and eateries. Not the cheapest but you can always head to China town for more cheaper foods /beer etc to offset.

We just had one night in Singapore last summer and stayed in The Clan Hotel which was excellent. There is a Ya Kun Kaya Toast around the corner which sells, as the name suggests, kaya toast, which is a traditional Singaporean breakfast.

The Singapore Botanic Gardens are a must visit - try to do it in the monring before it gets too hot.

I was there about 3 weeks ago and while the hotel we stayed in wasn't great the Maxwell / Chinatown area wasn't a bad area to be in at all. I found Singapore in general to be quite dull and very expensive but the old part of the city where we were wasn't too bad

Ritz Carlton if you have the £££
Declaration: I am Singaporean

Stayed there for a treat when we got a Singapore airlines stop over deal on our elective at med school. Ridiculously good and ended up booking it again as a stopover on honeymoon. Don’t remember it being crazy expensive as we booked via Singapore airlines. Would struggle to look past that if/when we re-visit Singapore.

Thanks to those that took the time to reply. We are in the Pan Pacific for the duration of the work event (Monday to Wednesday) but in somewhat of a panic the wife has booked a place for the weekend that sits between Raffles and Clarke Key Central, this was due to her worrying about availability given Lady Gaga announced on Tuesday that she was doing several shows in Singapore during the time we are there. How unfortunate!

Ha, so it’ll be a case of “look where you could have stayed” ? :p

To those mentioning Clark Quay, that was where we had the worst meal of our entire trip. It’s very touristy there, probably nice to walk along the front and have a drink maybe, but not good if you want some decent food. It was also hella expensive. We were very annoyed we bothered straying away from the hawker centres.

PS: since you’re there on Tuesday, iirc that’s the night you can find Satay Street - where a whole block and surrounding streets shut down for satay (and other) food stalls. Just don’t go in any clothes
you don’t want smelling of barbecue :p

We’re tentatively looking at a trip to Bali in the summer and I’ve started looking at hotels in Singapore for a 3 might stopover on the way out.

Obviously I’d love to stay at the Ritz Carlton, but the prices are eye watering. I can’t see that Singapore airlines are offering good stopover deals anymore. Is it still a thing?

Grand Park City Hall came up in my searches as did the Swisshotel. Any up to date recommendations?

Edit - will need many eating recommendations also! Thinking Sentosa and botanical gardens with the kiddos.

Three nights probably a bit much imo. Singapore is very expensive in general, cool city though. Food is excellent, particular the Hawker Hall areas. Theres a few of them, some more authentic than others (which you'll need cash for). Quay areas probably the best place to stay, we used the grab app to get around and its super cheap. You can use that in Bali too for taxis and food / booze deliveries so worth getting before your trip. Botanical gardens is worth a visit, they had some dinosaur exhibition thing on there which the kids would love.

I went back to Singapore with some mates for the pre season football in July, stayed in Gehlang. Wouldn't bother going there although I did like some of the craft beer places. Couple of premier league teams were there so prices were through the roof.

I liked it there, both times, but went for a reason each time. Work event and football. Don't think I'd choose to go back again just for a visit. Been to Bali 7 or 8 times though. Always enjoyed it there :)

Clarke Quay is a pretty good spot to stay if you can, easily walkable into the marina area, and then Chinatown and India region. You can also walk over the reservoir hill over into Orchard Road area (loads of malls and shops).

I don't think 3 days would be too long, especially if you take it steady (which given the heat most of the time, you'll be inclined to!)

Thanks for the replies, that's really helpful! If I were without the kids I think we'd 100% only stay 2 nights max, but we'll need to take it slow. The flip side to that is that we could extend the stay in Bali for a night and potentially stay somewhere nicer in Singapore for fewer nights.

Basically want to eat and experience the big city vibes. Things like the botanical gardens and the cloud forest dome sound good for the kids. Sentosa island is a bit cheesy, but the cable car is cool and great for the kids. Not 100% sure about the zoo, I guess it depends on how long we end up staying but I know it's amazing.
