hey.. last sunday, a girl in year 7 (11 years old) died by drowning... Tomorrow is her memorial and i have been asked to sing "You Raise me up" infront of the whole school.... I am scared ********... Can you guys reccomend any ways of getting rid of nerves... I really want to sing out of respect for the girl, but im just soo nervous....

if your any good, im sure you are if been asked to such a thing, then enjoy it as much as you can. Its a big deal, do your best and you will be fine.

Get drunk. My sister is terrified of public speaking (she's 24) and she ALWAYS has a vodka and orange before she does any kind of presentation to calm her down :D

I've never had to do something as poignant or important as that. But you should remember how positive this will be. Focus on the positive side of it. There is really nothing to be embarrassed about as far as I can see.

Quoted for the truth!

my wifes brother sang at his nans funeral. he has sung in front of a full football stadium before (Ashton Gate), he has sung infront of stars where he works (he works in a hotel), but he struggled (by his own admittance) to sing well at the funeral.
in all fairness, that had a more personal feel to it than your singing, but i think its quite relevent.

do your best, thats all you can do :]

Just relax and take it easy. Don't worry about looking silly, nobody will say anything negative about you at all, not at something like that. :)

Just go and do your best. Maybe take the words with you so you have something to look at and concentrate on/take your mind of the audience.

I am going for round 2 of my flute diploma tomorrow which I failed last year by a few marks. I'm absolutely bricking it already and know that if I fail again it will be due to nerves which just take over me completely. I'm not too bad playing in front of a big audience but when it is only 1 or 2 people I fall apart :(

Good luck, just do your best to enjoy it, that's what i'm going to try and do! :)

Don't be nervous, you're doing a lovely thing :) Being a bit blunt, you aren't what they are all there for, no one will mind in the slightest if you have an off day. Do your best and be proud of what you are doing :)

Maybe it was her favourite song or something? I don't see it being inappropriate at all, it's a nice song to sing about someone.

Your nerves will likely disappear once the moment comes. Nerves are about fearing the moment and will likely give you an adrenalin pump too. Once the moment arrives and you start singing you'll be away. Have faith :)
I don't recommend getting drunk to quell the nerves like has previously been suggested, esp if you are of school age... schoolkids these days :p

i find that stage nerves go away after about 1 minute of playing! when you get settled into it you will be ok... but the lead up to it is indeed nervy! there's maybe some herbal teas or whatever that might help?

I would imagine that catching someone's eye might get you a bit emotional so maybe find a spot on something over the top of the audience and concentrate on that while you are singing to keep your mind on the song you are singing - good luck and let us know how it went
