hi guy's and girls,

I have a singing psu. This only happens when i play games, I will load up any game or any 3d mark software it my psu sounds
like it's singing/sreaming baby and get's really loud if the fps goes up but as soon as i quit the game the noise stops!.

I do believe this is the coil making the noise!, can this cause any damage to my system/psu or is it all ok?

my psu is antec 650w

I'm not 100% sure if it will hurt your system but best to be safe rather than sorry. RMA your PSU and get another!

+1 on the RMA.

It's just not acceptable to have your PSU singing at you.

Just make sure it's your PSU and not your graphics card capacitors whining at you though.

how can i tell if it is the graphics card capacitors ?, when i listen it sounds more like the psu!, since this noise has been doing it i have change my graphics card.

I won't be able to RMA my psu as the what look like to me a floppy drive power conector was cut off about 4months back, went i modded my pc to be watercooled, I was sliding the case back 2gether wen i caught the cable in the side pannel and cut one of the wires of so i cut the rest off and taped it up and so i did'nt have a lose live wire there.
Or can i still RMA?

Well you can ask them. It's not like you did it on purpose and besides the whine has nothing to do with a floppy connector.

Otherwise you could try and fix it which will of course totally invalidate any warranty you have. Determine which coil/capacitor is whining and shove a blob of hot glue on it or something. This will affect the balance of the item and hopefully stop it resonating.

Coil whine, if that's what it is, as far as I know is caused by a high frequency vibration of an electronic component and that's why shoving a blob of glue on it sometimes helps. This is why I was somewhat relieved to see lots of blobs of glue on the coils and caps in my new power supply.

i will ring up overclockers and ask, don't get any where with out asking!.

If not i will try and give the glue trick ago.

Thanks

if it sounds as bad as rebecca black then RMA it.

if its got a decent voice then make a youtube video, put it on x factor, release an album and the money will come rolling in

hi,

Well i've just install a new psu (OCZ Fatality 750w) and i am still get getting the same noise, so i am now sure it is the graphics card capacitors. Does this mean the graphics card is on its way out?.

I've only had my 6950(flashed to 6970) for 2weeks, but i don't think i can RMA it cause i have removed the fan and added a water block to it.

Thanks

i know my gtx460 makes a high pitched whining noise when i run furmark, kind of like its trying to test its vocal range, starting at a really high pitch and gradually lowering in pitch. if its something like that then i wouldnt worry

Hi,

It something like that but my is when i play games and the fps goes above 100+

I've updated my gfx driver still the same, i've try using a hdmi cable still the same and i've gone back to the 6950 bios and still the same!..

I have the exact same problem with my flashed 6950, only really seems to happen in furmark. I've had it for about 6weeks and upgraded my psu in that time so it mist be the gfx. I've not altered it other than BIOS flash. Is the coil whine an issue for the longevity of the card?

My 580 does this in some games and also when folding.

Also when I run 2 5850 these did the same periodically.
