From what I understand and have read then yes you will get some improvements in favour of a single 5970 vs 4870's in crossfire. Also the single 5970 card won't have any of the issues caused by problems with crossfire.
Not sure about the 5870 - I'd have to research
Hope this helps

From what I can remember reading in reviews (this was a while ago though) is that a 5870 is similar, however a little better than a 4870 x2 or 4870 CF.

just get a gtx480 problem solved oh and the driver issues ATI have

Considering he already has 2 ATi cards in crossfire and seems fine with them, I'm sure he's fully capable of installing a set of drivers without PEBKAC cropping up.

get the 5870
then when your bored at home being ill, order another like me !
seriously tho, highly reccomend 5870's
if you have the coins get a 5970

+1 for 5870 cos it cool card Ive use.... plus cooler with good fan as GTX470/480 has smaller fan that can make hotter if play in heavy load.

Most users tend to say the noise has been blown (sorry, no pun :D) out of all proportion, but yes, they aren't regarded as quiet cards! :)

I know someone who has one and the noise is daft,
imagine them on SLI and on load.

the heat of the case also goes up a bit during play of demanding games.
but I guess i'm just a guy bothered by these things.
