Hey all,

Can you please suggest a single card that will offer better performance than two 5850's in crossfire? I'd like to go back to the green team but have a feeling for a reasonable price I'm going to have to settle for like for like performance?

Thanks

What is your budget and screen resolution? Cpu speed / overclock? :)

I think you're looking at an AMD 7970 / nVidia 670. A 7950 with a reasonably good overclock should manage to beat your 5970 as well.

Some benches (5850 Xfire is about 5970 performance):

VS 7970 Ghz ed: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/587?vs=618

VS 670: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/587?vs=598

VS 680: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/587?vs=555

All of these cards are pretty much on par/better than 5850 crossfire.

You haven't stated a budget :p.

You forgot:

:)

But... he said reasonably priced... have you seen the prices on the 690s?! :p. 690s are just 2 680 cores on one card anyway!

True, but you hit the nail on the head - single card, which is what he asked for. :p

You may have me on the reasonable price point though. ;)

Reasonably priced is sort of £350 max.

I currently game at 1680x1050 but am looking to get a 2420T possibly! Now whilst the 3d doesn't really interest me, I need team green for it to work?

The 670 doesn't really beat my cards in a lot, quite frustrating really as I'm not too keen on ATI's somewhat shoddy drivers.

Don't just go by maximum frame rates. Minimums, averages will be much better (as will performance be when AA is applied too), allowing for a smoother gaming experience, whatever you go for. :)

Take a look at these :

The 670 does beat it in a lot of areas. Have a relook at the AnandTech link, it's better in almost all games. Some benchmarks are lower is better. The last few is power consumption. I would say the 670 is the best for you if you want to try 3D.
