I have a customer who's wanting a RDS box to allow users from different locations to remote in and use some accounting software.

As I have setup similar systems before I was going to go down the Server 2012 Standard on one box with another box running as an RDS Server. The customer only wants to have one physical server though so can I virtualise this somehow?

I've been trying to work out what exactly Hyper V is and whether I could use this so thought speaking to people with a little more knowledge might be a good start.

Would it be easier to use Windows Server 2008 instead and use the server as a DC and an RDS server? Although this is not officially liked by Microsoft it is possible with this setup.

Thanks!

2012 standard will give you the ability to have 2 VM's via Hyper-V for free (in licensing terms). I Would reccomend the physical with just the Hyper-V role. Virtualise your RDS Server using Hyper-V and also virtualise a DC.

That way you have separation, you don't want RDS on a DC. You can perform backups on the host level and you will be backing up the VHD of all guests then too.
