Rather niche, but I'm looking to get a travel hob to use in the garage from time to time for various reasons (stew, homebrew, smelly frying etc).

Can anyone recommend? As ever, reviews on websites have some negatives such as 'blew up after 3 months) and the like so I wonder if anyone has one they can recommend?

I'm wondering about IKEA!

Well, a Tefal one is £70ish and own brand from the rainforest is £50, as is IKEA... But you get what you pay for?

We have an Ikea single ring one. It seems fine. We don't use it often, but I'm afraid I have never cooked on any other induction ring to be able to compare it. At lower powers it seems to cycle on and off, rather than varying the power output and keeping it constant, but I've been told that's how most induction cookers work, except at the very high end of the market. It certainly gets very hot at max settings. It's fan can get quite loud, particularly when you are using it at higher "heat" settings. For the price we paid, about £50, I have no complaints or regrets.

yes - that's the main problem discussed in older thread ... and to this day manufacturers even of installed plates hide that characteristic,
it's analogous to the invertor functionality on microwaves+fridges - where they explicitly make invertor a selling point ..
and, along with uneven heat distribution&lower power, is why I prefer gas. I suppose the technology and fast switching electronics to give high pulse width modulation don't meet the price points.

I live alone and have a single hob 2000W Andrew James induction unit as my only hob option. They are about £45 but I was given mine. It has a duty cycle to regulate but I don't find it a problem. I imagine that discrete speed values with duty cycle is cheaper than always on with fully variable speed. You just have to learn your own hob's peculiarities and find the best pan(s) for it. Mine gets on very well with my Aldi (Crofton) honeycomb teflon deep frying pan (£23). My other cooking options at home are Cosori Air Fryer, Aldi (Ambiani) microwave and cooking chamber in my multi-fuel stove. Also want to build an outdoor oven so I don't have to fire up the stove in the summer.

I've got a tefal one and it works great.

I don't use any of the auto functions but I tested boil on a pan and it worked fine.

I have the regular one. it's a bit noisy on the higher settings and seems to kick out a lot of EMI but works great

setting 4 does a nice slow rolling boil for like pasta etc.

yea that's how they work, it's like pulses.
the higher the setting the more powerful and longer the pulse with less time between.

My induction rice cooker does the same

We bought a Vango one a couple of years ago for camping that would probably suit for smaller cooks.

We have had the IKEA one since 2017, and for the last 4 years it has been our only hob - still going strong!
