Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal. I've not played The Dark Ages, but it's a step down from what I've read.

If you like RPGs similar to Final Fantasy, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

I have a few other random games on my list like Sekiro, RDR2, God of War and Prey 2017.

After finishing F.E.A.R I started playing 2 (will get back to the other installments after) and realised I've never actually played 2 before. It's...ok, at this point any FPS I've not played is a godsend

Play Red Faction series and Soldier of Fortune. They don't make em like that any more.

Most modern FPS (&puzzle) games are pretty garbage IMO, but a few solid ones still exist:

  • DOOM (2016)
  • The Talos Principle
  • Bioshock series
  • Metro series
  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Far Cry 3 was the last acceptable entry before the series turned into generic open-world slop. Even FC3 gets repetitive, but it still has a decent story and a genuinely nice world.
Dishonored, maybe: depends on whether stealth-heavy gameplay clicks for you.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is also worth mentioning. These days it’s basically more of a shooter than older Rockstar games anyway; most main story missions are pretty over-the-top shootouts.

The only real modern shooters I have in my top 20 played list are Cyberpunk and Fallout 4. So much generic trash out there these days.

I did the same with Dead Island 2, spent hours playing and enjoying it then the last boss was a PITA so I just uninstalled it.
Shame when games are (imo) ruined by silly tough endings.

I really enjoyed Cronos up to the final boss. The very very last bit, I gave up. I will go back at some point, maybe.

It's not that hard. Just need to run around a bit and shoot the boxes with ammo and health.

Take as much ammo and health in to the fight as well. I sold my expensive ammo shells for cheaper hand gun and shotgun ammo as you get more quantity.
