Me and a friend. Where having the discussion about single slot cards and seeing other threads on single slot cards, I thought I would ask you lot.
Do you think that single slot 960 is a possibility or (my oppinion) would it still be too much for a single slot design cooler?
Maybe for the next chip down, seeing as the 960 will be a third card from the gm204 chip.

Well yes for whatever card an partner does it for it would be a niche card, as a dual slot cooler would be better, but do you think it would be possible or be too much for a single slot design?

Think it will be possible, don't know if any partners will do it though because of how many connectors cards have on the back these days.

A single slot gtx970 is unlikely as the tpu figures indicate power consumption similar to the gtx670. The fastest single slot card was an hd7850 which consumes less than 100w for the card. The gtx960 is probably going to consume as much power as my gtx660 making a single slot card less likely but still possible. Its likely to be large.

Edit!!

OK there was a single slot gtx670 so that makes it possible. But it was very long meaning it would not fit into smaller cases and ran hot.

Ultimately, its the length which is the problem - single slot cards are usually more for cramped htpc and sff cases which means length is important.

Even the single slot gtx750ti is much longer than normal gtx750ti cards.

Anything which is not bus powered or needs much more than 100w for the card is a bit pointless IMHO.

They are going to be noisy and run hotter meaning more chance of throttling.
