Single slot advice

Hi

I am torn between these 2 cards
X1950GT
7900GT OC

As I can only accomodate a single slot card I obviously do not have much choice. Out of the 2 above what would give me the best bang for buck.
My current setup is:
Shuttle SN21G5
Athlon 3500
Pcolor X800GT

Thanks

Arif

If you haven't already researched it yourself then for a shuttle I'd say your better off with the coolest running and lowest power consumption which if the X1900 series is anything to go by, puts the X1950 firmly in the "dodgy" category.

I'd go with a 7600 GT at £88 which would still be a nice upgrade to an X800 GT cos I just don't think I can bring myself to recommend a 7900 GT  :p

I don't think anyone has seen the x1950 GT yet, so i doubt anyone can comment on what cooler it is going have, let alone when its due out, 7900 GT would do the job nicely though if your after a single slot card, but if you get one go for the EVGA as they are about the only ones that are fixed at the moment, as the rest of them are borked, also the 7900 GT is better than the x1800 XL, would be a cracking performance increase from your x800 GT. :)

LMFAO!!! :D The other option is a 7900 GT, which has a 5% failure rate, and we're calling any other graphics card "dodgy"? LMFAO! :D This is comedy.

If you want a single-slot card then go for an X1900 GT.

Yeah but you can't call any card "dodgy" compared to one that has a 5% rate of failure, regardless of how loud it runs or how much power it draws. A little more heat and power is a fair price for a card that doesn't have 1 in 20 of them break.

Both have their pros and cons, but when it comes to the dodgy award, the 7900 GT takes the cake and eats it all, and the pies too.

Fair point but according to those charts I linked 7900 GT uses nearly half the power under full load to even a X1900 GT and various reviews have shown it (the X1900 GT) to be very hot running (all of which is going straight back into a titchy little case). The 7600 GT in particular is only using 35 Watts  , I dunno how big of an issue it is for a shuttle (and that one in particular, hence asking if he has researched if it'd be ok) but potentially that amount of power draw and heat output (from an X1900) could make the system unstable where a 7x00 would not (which won't help much if the card is borked admittedly but I do think it is enough to justify calling an X19x0 card dodgy for a SFF PC :p ).

SFF PSUs work fine even with X1900 XTs, I know someone who uses a HIS IceQ 3 X1900 XT in their shuttle. The X1900 GTs also don't have a 5% failure rate, so which card is more dodgy? :p

Ok then I stand corrected, just for me, a card like that in a SFF PC makes me think of pop bang fizz ;)

Also I didn't actually recommend a 7900 GT, it was a 7600 GT :p

Yeah but the thread about about the 7900 GT and X1950 GT, since the X1950 GT isn't out yet I suggested the X1900 GT which is equal in power to the 7900 GT and also single-slot cooling. So what's your excuse? :p :D

ooops my bad :o

I meant the x1900gt in the top post, sorry to get you guys going on one :p :o

So........I think I will be getting the x1900gt then
a: single slot
b: having seen other people use double slot cards in dremeled cases i think the power should be capable of taking it. ( I don't really want to dremel the case tbh.
I would like to go for the 7900gt but the price of the x1900gt is a lot better and I honestly do prefer the picture quality coming out of the ati cards.

Thanks to all your comments and sorry to make you go off oone on the x1950gt card :o
