Single slot Graphics Card

Hi all,

First time poster, but long time lurker.

I'm trying to decide what is the best single slot PCI-Express Graphics Card for me. It's to go in a Core2Duo based Shuttle and it's only purpose will be to play games.

The Computer is being re-tasked to playing games - it was previously only used as an HTPC so the passive ATI HD5450 isn't going to cut it.

Is there a good medium range solution, and what's the highest spec card out there regardless of money.

Hi there,

The cheapest/easiest option is probably to go for a single slot HD 6770 like this one (basically it's just a re-badged HD 5770). It performs pretty well for games and is relatively cheap, cool and low power.

If you want to push the boat out a bit further then I believe Powercolor have released a single slot HD 6850, which is a fair bit faster than a HD 6770/5770. However, it does costs ~£150 is seems to be pretty tough to get hold of.

May I ask what make and model number PSU you are using?

Thanks for the reply.

Hopefully it's going in a Shuttle SG31G2 which has the traditional 250W Shuttle PSU. It looks very similar to the old SilentX one and it may well be one and the same.

The HD 6770 looks worthwhile at a reasonable price. I have DIRT 2 and my other PC can't even run it without so much as falling over so I imagine that this is a far more powerful card (nVidia 7950GT in the other system) as it's supplied with DIRT 3.

Do you know what CPU you got in your system? Cause if you got some slow CPU like a dual-core at 1.66GHz, it will bottleneck the 6770..or even the slower 6670, and still won't deliver the gaming performance you are hoping for.

Hi, it's an E6750. I'd be interested to know your thoughts.
Yea that's ok. As long as you are not playing CPU intensive games like Total Wars series you should be fine. But then again CodeMaster's racing games has always been a bit heavy on the CPU side...but you should still get playable performance.

Playing slightly older games is fine by me. I may pick up the new Sonic game next month and I noticed Metro2033 is cheap on Steam. Maybe play DIRT 2/3, Modern Warfare 2, GTA4 etc.

I think i'll order one of the HD 6770's unless there is another option.

Metro is a system hog! Best avoided unless you have a fast PC IMO. ;)

Stick with MW2 etc.

...and here I was thinking the Computer was fairly quick! :)

It's very likely i'll get GTA4 anyway but if it runs like a dog then that'll be the end of that. Might give Metro 2033 a swerve - bit fed up of FPS/end-of-the-world-is-nigh style games. Damn Steam and it's cheap offerings!
