Hi all ive just bought an opteron 170 to replace my 146 as i thought the socket 939 prices were quite good and i cant afford to buy new mobo, RAM etc to go C2D. The stepping is CCBBE so im hoping to get close to 2.8gig. I dont know much about dual cores so my question is- Is there any extra drivers or apps i need to install when i do the new format with the new dual-core? (im using windows XP) Im asking as ive seen the AMD Dual-Core Optimizer driver and read people moaning about performance drops with dual-cores, im actually starting to wonder if i should've bothered. I have the latest nvidia chipset driver 6.86 and i believe my mobo bios is fine with dual-cores. Should i just format as i usually do with all the latest drivers? and that be it? Do i need that dual core optimiser driver? or the amd driver? i didnt use it with my current amd at 2.9gig. I really appreciate any help u give. Thanx. EDIT- Also should i do the xp hotfix thing?

So its only the dual core optimiser that i need to install on top of the usual stuff? At what point in the instal should i do it? before graphics drivers etc? about the clocking both cores thing, i thought that when i change settings in the bios these will be applied to both cores or am i missing something? EDIT- i also encode avi's i download to DVD video and convert avi's to mp4 for my mobile so that sounds good, thanks

Can people just confirm for me wether i SHOULD install these drivers and that theres nothing else i need. Thanks guys. I wont be doing it till next week but im just starting to get it straight in my head and do my back ups n all that annoyin stuff.

Theres also the xp dual-core registry hotfix? can anyone tell me if i should bother doing it? Im pretty sure i disable the cool n quiet anyway if that makes a difference. If i can get a fairly definitive answer about these issues from someone who's been happy with their amd dual core performance then i can install and format with confidence. Cheers guys!!

Well im not as clear as i would've hoped but your help is certainly appreciated. I guess il have to format n see. Im sure Il be posting again if i run into problems. Fingers crossed eh.

Luckilly no, it was completely unexpected. Royal mail are annoyin, they come so early, even on a saturday. Even if u hear the door u can here the van driving away before uve had chance to realise whats happening. I need a minute to remember my own name in a morning!! Enough ranting, il be ready 4 em 2moz. hopefully :D

Hey guys just got the opty 170 in and got it straight up to 2.9gig with stock volts :D , its also running cooler than i expected, with core temp core0=31-33 core1=29-31. Im certain itl do 3gig but i dont wanna rush it so il leave it a couple of days n do some propper benching, also 2.9gig fits well with my RAM allowing me to run at tighter timings so il have to test n give it some thought. I really took my time instaling it, i was so nervous ha. anyway im a very happy chappie now!! :D
