I have a AMD 939 socket motherboard with single core processor. Is it possible to wack a new dual core processor in that has a 939 socket as well?
(like the AMD Athlon 64 FX FX-60 Dual Core Processor) and is it worth it? (I have AMD Athlon 64 4000+ now)
 
For single thread applications it will not be noticeably quicker, as it is only 200mhz faster (2.4 vs 2.6GHz), but anything designed for dual core or multitasking will be quicker. Windows will generally 'feel' smoother. It will not be much hotter, but if you're not running a decent cooler already, I would recommend changing at the same time.

Whether it is worth the money or not I don't know - 939 chips are expensive for what they are. Personally I would wait and go for a Core 2 Duo cpu/board/ddr2 etc.
 
I assume you have DDR ram instead of DDR2 ram and AGP instead of PCI-e?
I definatly agree with duke that the 939's are expensive but you should notice an improvement if you can find one.

A single core with a application loaded at 100% will be unusable on a single core, on a dual core you can load out core 0, and core 1 can then be used for Windows.

So a dual core will always be faster.
 
yes , I have DDR ram and AGP. Is it easy to get an Intel motherboard that is compatable with all my current hardware that works with AMD?

hmm, im not in that legue yet, but ive known "Asrocks" always do a "mid-way" board, worth checking it out

coz I had an asrock board when i had AGP and i sure they did one similar to what i had for DDR and DDR2 memory, dual core CPUs and AGP
