Single to Xfire first timer

There are 2 front fan slots, one rear slot, one top slot (in use) and one side slot (in use).

If need be I can stick one in the front to blow cool air in while the other two take it out. Noise is only a slight problem as I have the tower on my desk next to the monitor rather then on the floor where it seems to get filled with dust.

If people think that will be ok i will get one whee they come down in price along with a spare fan. I am not playing anything atm so there is no point me buying one yet.

with just two fans, i would say either stick them in the top and rear postions, both extracting air, or in the lower front and rear positions, front intaking air, rear extracting air.

if you're worried about temps, you can get decent 120mm fans for £5-10 each. I would consider another one or two if you're thinking crossfire

edit: just realised the top fan is larger than the others. go with the rear and top setup then.

78ºC is nothing to worry about, above 90ºC might be cause for concern but gfx cards can take heat.

Another benchmark u can try is Unigine Heaven Benchmark tho furmark is probably best to use as it heats the card up very quickly so can be good if ur going up in increments of 5MHz. Furmark also shows the temp of the card.

You should be able to get 100-200mhz on your 5850 as an "easy" overclock. If you don't feel confident about going any further, stick with it and then leave it for a few months.

You might find, in a few months you'll feel adventurous enough to try and push it a bit more. And then you might start reading into increasing volts, and setting up fan profiles, etc, etc. One day you might get onto water cooling. I am not at that stage, thank god for my wallet ¬_¬ (considering it though :P)

ATI Overdrive sucks lool you would use MSI Afterburner to OC... people seem to get stable overclocks but you need to watch out for the heat...

Another 5850 gives you a nice FPS boost, I added mine without adding more fans, but don't use ATI 10.6 drivers at the moment with crossfire.

It doesn't suck, it just doesn't allow you to fiddle with the voltages. It's ATi's safe way for users to easily overclock their card, despite it would be better to just buy a card that has been overclocked.

I have two more fans coming today.

Just to check, should I have the front and side as an intake and Top and rear as an out take? The new new ones have temp sensors on them so I HOPE they will change speed as needed so i was going to put them in the front and rear.

every time I overclock with it i get blue screened :)

What fans did you get in the end? and yes any fan at the top have as an out as heat rises..

Well I installed my two new fans.

I bought two Antec (figured same make as case and hard to go wrong) 120mm smartcool with thermal control. I put a new one in the front (intake) thats in a perfect spot to blow over my GPU. I moved my HDD down so I have room for a second GPU later. Another new one in the top/rear (out take). The original 120mm that was in the rear I placed as an intake in the side (poked the control out through an unused slot at the back so i dont have to keep going back in) and i have to leave the top as its 140mm and i kept it as an outtake.

The backs ok but the front one I can hear.

I am using Antec 300 so i am wondering if its the 'cage' i can hear moving. Its a constant hum thats louder then everything else. I hope I got it right that the side that turns with the fan (when facing outward) makes it an intake.

Hi Celebryn, I have a 5850 too and OC'd it to the max settings you can using ATI Overdrive in CCC. I know you can push it further using afterburner but as a complete newbie I just wanted a safe as possible OC. My temps were 70 degrees after 30 minutes of stability testing using furmark (went up to 70 then just stayed there completely steady). I have a benchmark link for 3dmark vantage I can post up later but I don't have it available on the work PC I am using at the moment. I think it was something like 15700 for the graphics.

I think it could be my HDD that making that noise. I moved it lower down where it is opposite the PSU. I tightened it but it just wont shut up :(

I am going to try CCC OC again now I have my fans in though I will be using MSI Kombustor to test stablity.

I hate this Antec three hundred case... I can not come away without leaving blood streaks over the interior, damn thing is sharp!
