Sinister rock that isn't Death Metal

Just a quick one. I've been listening to A Perfect Circle's "Counting Bodies Like Sheep" and it's absolutely immense. Can any of you recommend other songs/artists who make similarly heavy/sinister/moody/melodic rock?

Tool are another good example, although most of their stuff isn't particularly akin to this specific Perfect Circle track. Nine Inch Nails sometimes dabble with heavy synth, boombastic drums and a grinding riffs, although again most of their stuff i'm not interested in.

Cheers,

Check out mid-late period stuff by Katatonia, Anathema and Paradise Lost. It seems like just the kind of thing you're after: moody, melancholy stuff without growls..avoid the early stuff from all of those bands as it is growly (though you MUST check out 'Brave Murder Day' by Katatonia)..

Growls are great, tho :D

It's not rock music but if you want to hear something genuinely unsettling and scary, check out 'Malediction & Prayer' or 'La Serpenta Canta' by Diamanda Galas.....you will be scared!

Im going to add an oldie here and say "Fields of the Nephilim". While Carl's voice can be a bit gruff and take a bit of getting used to, on the album "Elizium" it actually passes as a reasonable singing voice. "Elizium" melds the use of heavy guitar, drums, keyboards and samples although given its a pretty old album its unlikely to sound much like anything that the OP has mentioned. The Neph have always strayed much closer to rock with their music than any other so called Goth band.

I actually find some of kidneythieves stuff pretty sinister sounding.

The legend that is Carcass should never be uttered in the same breath as these other bands!!! :p :D

For sinister/moody/atmospheric you need to listen to Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures is an all time classic, and has influenced countless groups since it was released.
