You probably all know this, but the man behind Apple's excellent designs is in fact an English chap, and he's now getting a knighthood. :)

Very well deserved.

Jonathan Ive, Apple's head of design, has been awarded a knighthood in the New Year Honours list.

Mr Ive, who can now style himself Sir Jonathan, has been made a Knight Commander of the British Empire (KBE).

Raised in Chingford, Mr Ive began working for Apple in 1992 and since then has been the brains behind many of its products.

He described the honour as "absolutely thrilling" and said he was "both humbled and sincerely grateful".

Yup, knew about this. Jony, as everyone calls him :)

Reading Steve Jobs ATM and he seems an incredibly capable, and interesting man with a great passion for what he does. Well deserved.

Suppose if you can't knight Bill or Steve, you gotta knight someone, sounds like she was handing them out this year, Helena Bonham Carter got one too

Actually you can. Bill Gates was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2005. This is the same order that Jonathan Ive received. The only difference is that Foreign nationals i.e non Commonwealth recepients cannot title themselves Sir.

Notwithstanding this, it is a well deserved recognition of Jonathan Ive, congratulations to him.

Well deserved are people serious?

Knighthoods should be reserved for people who do amazing things like inventing a cure for breast cancer or dedicating their life to charity or helping someone etc etc.

Yes hes extremely talented and deserves recognition but a knighthood? oh come on!

I think you mistaken a Knighthood for a Nobel Prize or just feigned grievance several years/decades too late?

Shock horror, an unworthy recipient is new news!?!

ps3ud0

He was knighted today:

Jonathan Ive - the British designer responsible for Apple's iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad - has been knighted at Buckingham Palace.

Apple's senior vice-president of industrial design has said he is "both humbled and sincerely grateful" for the "absolutely thrilling honour".

Sir Jonathan, 45, told the Daily Telegraph he was "the product of a very British design education".

He was born in Chingford, east London, and studied at Newcastle Polytechnic.

In a rare interview, published in the paper on Wednesday, he said that, "even in high school, I was keenly aware of this remarkable tradition that the UK had of designing and making".

"It's important to remember that Britain was the first country to industrialize, so I think there's a strong argument to say this is where my profession was founded."

They are given to people that tend to have dedicated themselves to a particular field over and number of years and are often considered some of the best in the world at what they do. His designs helped to revolutionise the music and mobile phone industries. Some people might say that is harder to do that working for a charity. You don't have to be anything special to work for charities throughout your life, you do if you want to be one of the best product designers in the world.

Well, when you're the lead design in a product that's changed the lives of many people, wobbling a huge conglomerate that is otherwise known as Microsoft, changed the face of computing, and made the company you work for, one of the richest in the world, then you can come back and make your argument..

In the meantime STFU !

I dunno, I'd agree if that was what the honour or critera was about but if football managers can earn them then I'd wage this guy can. He has designed some of the most recognizable, famous and popular products the world has seen.

Congrats Sir Jony!

So what about sportspersons or actors? They're hardly the philanthropists in their main job are they, so it's no different. I think you'll find the criteria for knighthood is quite broad!
