Sirens from idle PC!!

Just had a bit of a fright when my PC, idling away doing nothing, started to make a high pitched siren sound.. constant pitch, constant noise, not two tone.

A swift blow to the power switch and off it fows and the post mortem starts. It boots ok, went into BIOS and left idling for 30 mins and temps seem ok.

Looked in case and all fans are going... EXCEPT the PSU fan. This is either a really easy win in the sense that the problem is identified OR do these things only spin up the fans when the temps go up? it's a BFG 800W thing, part of a system supplied complete and built by OC (the 6600 o'ced to 3.0gHz one).

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Quite a lot of modern PSU's only turn on the fan when needed so this may be the case for yours. Try to put the system under stress a bit and watch closely to see if the fan turns on. If it doesn't then this could indicate a faulty PSU/temp reader.

Was the noise coming from inside the case or was it coming through the speakers? If it was from something inside the case then it is most likely to be a hardware problem eg. fan failure or high temperatures. If it came from the speakers then it could be a software error although i'm not entirely sure what would cause this in windows.

thanks for reply. no speakers attached so de facto had to be from inside the case.

loading up Sup Com to put it under load and see what happens to psu fan. Could it have been something as weird as a power surge affecting voltages? (kinda stormy here at the moment)

I should think that if it was a power surge then the pc would just shut down rather than produce an error tone.

A continuous beep, to me, sounds as though it's a fan fail warning message. I used to get it on my old motherboard with the cpu fan plugged into the motherboard. It would randomly turn off the fan and then give out a similar fan fail warning message.

BTW you're a bit of a nutter running your pc during a storm  :p I hope you have a surge protector! I remember a guy on here ended up with 4 broken pc's after a lightning storm struck near him!

Just played a full game of Supreme Commander to put system under load... no activity at all from the PSU fan.

Questions shall be raised in the house!
