Looking to spend about £700 absolute tops, must be reasonably strong and a quality brand (i.e. no Acer rubbish), and reasonably quick. 13- 15" screen is probably about the right size.

Any suggestions welcome :)

Thanks

Because in my experience they are flimsy as hell- the hinges are cracking on her current Acer :(

I would steer clear of the Acer TBH mate.

I have an IBM T60 (Thanks to my co), and my sister has an Acer.... The Acer makes me want to cry every time I use it... It's creaky, flimsy, runs hot and noisy, and the whole thing just feels poor quality.

The IBM is much more solid, has metal hinges, better screen, better keyboard, and does not creak at all- how a laptop should be! The comparison is like night and day...

Not saying you should go for an IBM, as they are very work- orientated machines, but avoid Acer at all costs in my experience!

From my other thread, I had a look at the Dells.

Vostro 1710.

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T8100 (2.1 GHz, 3 MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz FSB)
Genuine Windows® Vista™ Business with Service Pack 1
17" UltraSharp™ Widescreen WUXGA (1920 x 1200) Display with TrueLife™
3072MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (1x1024 + 1x2048 MB)
320GB (5400rpm) SATA Hard Drive
256 MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8600M GT (128 bit) Graphic Card
Glossy Black with 1.3 MP Camera

£711 Delivered.

You could lower the price by removing things like the upgrade on the screen and reduce the memory to 2GB?

I'm trying to work out what the Vostro 1710 looks like though, I'm hoping it's similar to the redesigned Vostro 1510, with the glossy black backing, and media buttons. Looks quite smart.
